HistoryHouseTuesday, July 29 – 7:00 PM – Carrie Giauque presents “It Comes Down to Money: The Economic Benefits of Historic Preservation” in the visitors center at Renfrew Museum and Park, 1010 East Main Street.

This program is a part of lecture series to develop a public awareness of historic restoration ideas, techniques and benefits. It fits well with a revived interest for establishment of an Historic District in Waynesboro and restoration of notable historic structures.

Nick Andrew StaverOn The Square

5:00 PM – Music On the Square – Gettysburg’s Nick Andrew Staver will be providing the music in Center Square on Friday night. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Staver relocated to Central Pennsylvania from Philadelphia earlier this year. He describes each of his performances as “an intimate opportunity to capture a desired dose of rhythm and blues mixed into modern songwriting storylines.” The guitarist will step up to the microphone at 5:00 PM.

Thomas RoueOn The Square

3:00 – 6:00 PM – Thomas Roue takes his turn entertaining audiences on Center Square. Roue is based out of Gettysburg and can often be seen performing as the lead singer of Pale Barn Ghosts, whose music has been described as “haunting cemetery folk.” He believes his lyrics speak to the idea “that life, death and love are the only themes that really count.” His set is scheduled between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00 p.m.

42 West Artists Co-Op

Tom Tholen21:00 – 3:00 PM – Tom Tholen will demonstrate “Painting the Portrait” in oil at 42 West Arts from 1:00 to 3:00 on Saturday afternoon. Tholen has been an active artist for more than 25 years, with combined experience in storyboard, layout and concept work. He loves to share his passion for art with others who are willing to take time to investigate and push their own level of skills. Tholen believes that “all of us are born with the ability to be artistic. Those who we see as artists pursue that skill and with determined practice become ‘artists.’”

JBergerCheeseyCatJenniferBergerThroughout August – The co-op will be displaying the work of “Cumberland Valley Craftsmen Guild Member of the Month,” Jennifer Berger. Berger designs, knits and felts all of her own artwork, including dolls, ornaments and other decorative items. She says her creations are whimsical interpretations of things that are real and imaginary.

Sunday, August 3

Tod and Jerry KowallisPresbyterian Church

3:00 PM – Jerry Kowallis, a longtime choral music director at the Waynesboro Area Senior High School, will be joined by his son, Tod, for a special one-hour concert on Sunday at the Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro on Main Street. The free show will feature arias and duets from the world of opera, rarely heard Spanish songs and a few Neapolitan numbers. The father and son duo will explore show tunes and musical theater during the second half of their performance. They’ll be accompanied on piano by Joan Boytim. Doors to the church will open at 2:30 p.m. before Jerry and Tod take the stage at 3:00.

Green Blues Band1:00 – 4:00 PM – The Green Blues Ban – Back again by popular demand, the Green Blues Band will round out the weekend of music with a Sunday afternoon performance. The makeshift ensemble was first heard on Center Square three weeks ago. This week they perform as a trio with tuba player Zach Grass , Austin Beaufort (trombone) and Ethan Mankins (drums) creating a sound that won’t soon be forgotten.

5:00 PM – Music On the Square – Friday night’s music on Center Square will be provided by The Lowdown Grasskickers. Formed as an off-shoot of The Boro Boogie Pickers in 2013, the bluegrass band features the familiar sounds of “Destination ARTS!” favorites, Jon Ingels (mandolin, guitar, dobro) and Brad Munn (guitar and fiddle), as well as Kevin Coldsmith (bass) and Rob Kullman (banjo). In addition to bluegrass, the band also crosses into country, rock, folk and blues music, with extended jams and improvisation when the mood strikes. The strings will start being strummed at 5:00.

Samulori12:00 – 3:00 PM – On the Square – A group of Korean performers are set to entertain an audience on Center Square from noon until 3:00 p.m. Specializing in a percussion-style music known as Samulnori, the group uses four instruments (Puk, Janngu, Jing and K’Kwaenggwari) to represent an element of nature. David Wayne and Miss Penelope4:00 – 6:00 PM – On the Square – Anyone visiting the square is in for “A Magical Experience.” After making their first “Destination ARTS!” appearance last September, David Wayne and Miss Penelope return to downtown Waynesboro to perform a two-hour magic show. A magician for the past 18 years, David has taken his talents to New York City, Orlando and Washington, D.C.  Miss Penelope (Judy Bowers) was a teacher in the Waynesboro Area School District before retiring. In addition to assisting with the magic show, she will be making balloon animals for children.

Andy Smetzer30042 West Artists Co-Op

2:00 – 4:00 PM – photographer Andy Smetzer demonstrating the creation of his “Alien Island” picture between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00 at 42 West ARTS Co-Op. Smetzer says his secret was blending and layering a variety of images to create a final, mysterious destination.

“When out shooting, I will often photograph random objects like rocks, tree stumps and clouds, which are kept in a library of images to use on future projects. I particularly like stormy, moody landscapes, and I try to capture that feeling in those shots.”

Denny with Elephant1:00 – 3:00Denny Bingaman is back at 42 West ARTS on Saturday. This week, he’ll be unmolding and finishing a cold cast bronze piece.  Bingaman’s clay works from the first week were used to render rubber molds for cold casting bronze, copper and other materials. After the casting is applied, the artist applies a patina before finishing everything off with wax and steel wool.

Green Blues BandOn the Square

1:00 PM – Back by popular demand, the Green Blues Band will round out the weekend of music with a Sunday afternoon performance. Wild Things!

             A witty world of painting, dolls and ceramics

Gallery20Sign400Gallery 20 East presents a wonderfully whimsical and witty art exhibit to delight adults and children of all ages. Artist Sally Truitt of Lyons, Colorado reveals the secret life of cows and owls, and the dreams of friendly monsters. Eddie Keach Filemyr finds an exuberant jungle in our backyards, with her vivid and passionate paintings of flowers and vegetables. Michalina Eisenberg creates a whole new world with her charming hand made cloth dolls, characters in a comedy of imagination.

SallyTruitSally Truitt has been an artist since she discovered melting crayons on a hot radiator with her sisters. She is drawn to weathered, discarded media found in or around nature (wood, rust, parts of things, tools) as well as acrylic on canvas, transfers and prints. She attended Wooster College and has exhibited her art in Los Angeles, Washington DC, Telluride and Lyons Colorado. A professional bluegrass musician, Sally can be seen on a recent TED Talk.

EddieFilmoreBloom400Eddie Keach Filemyr works in acrylics, ceramics, jewelry design and landscape design. She studied art at Antioch University (MFA) and Skidmore College (BS in design) and currently teaches art at Delaware Technical College. She has recently received awards for her art from Millsboro Art League, Delaware Technical College and Mispillin Art Gallery. Eddie Leach Filmyr lives in Milton, Delaware and lived in Leitersburg Md for fifteen years.

MichalinaEisenbergMichalina Eisenberg has always made dolls, starting out with the simple rag doll design. She is now working with cloth and mixed media to create the art pieces you see today. Michalina is a painter, quilter, wire sculptor, faux finisher, art teacher and fabric artist, but creating her unique and droll dolls gives her the most pleasure. Originally from Connecticut, she attended Paier College of Art with a degree in Advertising and Graphic Design and did post graduate work at the Corcoran College of Art. Michalina currently resides in Frederick, Maryland where she works on her creations at home in her new studio.

Techniques With Pen and Ink – A Class by Laura Lewis Shindle

Laura Shindle-Pen & InkWhy are and old buildings or a crooked tree so intriguing? Could it be the nostalgia it creates, much like an old black and white photo and how it creates sharp contrast and detail? By taking a pen in hand, you will learn how different marks, intersecting each other, can create texture, value, and mood. But, most importantly, remember in this class one should feel free to experiment, relax and enjoy a fun filled day with a fabulous piece of art to take home also.

Class Description – Pen and Ink can look much like a nostalgic black and white photo. By taking pen in hand, you will learn to make different marks, intersecting each other, creating texture, value, and mood. In this class one should feel free to experiment, RELAX and ENJOY a fun filled day with a fabulous piece of art to take home and frame.

Laura was born and raised in Hagerstown, MD.  Attended Washington Co Museum of Art for ten years and continued her education at the Ringling School of Art, in Florida, Hagerstown Community College, and numerous workshops under the instruction of accomplished artist throughout the US and England.

New activities include a first ever Singer-Songwriter Showcase and a “read-through” of a new play. Gallery 20 East has the final showing of the “Prism” exhibit. Six galleries will be open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

ERSprenkleEngine8:00 AMThe Antietam Historical Association’s July “Third Thursday Biography Breakfast” will be held at Christine’s Cafe on July 17 beginning at 8 AM. Nate Green will lead the discussion about the late Elam R. Sprenkle (1917-2010), a local pattern maker who was well-known for his museum-quality scale replicas of Baldwin “Atlantic” locomotives. Sprenkle’s elder son, Dr. E. Ray Sprenkle, of Baltimore, will be on hand to share some photos and memories.

6:00 – 9:00 PMTrudy Gembe-Palughi, local art teacher and Guild member, will lead a Ribbon Wall Pockets Workshop at The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 9:00. Students will create and decorate a ribbon wall pocket made from stoneware clay, and they’ll also have an opportunity to select a glaze for the piece, which will be fired and ready to be picked up after July 31. The cost of the class is $30.00 per person.

 Music On the Square

JeremyTosten5:00 – 8:00 PM – A special Singer-Songwriter Showcase will be featured on Center Square on Friday night, as regulars Brad Munn and Jon Ingels are joined by newcomer Jeremy Tosten taking turns performing original music beginning at 5:00. This is expected to be the first in a series of showcases scheduled throughout the summer, allowing audiences to hear several songs for the first time and get involved with the creative process.

Jeremy Tosten of Coburn, PA performs as a multi instrumentalist and a singer/songwriter  in Pennsylvania’s Centre Region.  Originally from Waynesboro, his music is rooted in appalachian, folk and gospel music.  Currently a member of the Poe Valley Troubadours who are regulars at the Elk Creek Cafe and Ale works in Millhiem PA.

Brad MunnBrad Munn is a local musician who has been composing music and lyrics for more then 20 years. Brads compositions range from Bluegrass to rock music.

jonathan-ingels-2Jon Ingels is a guitarist and singer/songwriter from Waynesboro PA. Jon performs with the Bluegrass band The Boro Boogie Pickers as well as the Blues Rock outfit Big Whiskey. In his solo performances Jon draws from all his influences ranging from blues to country, rock to reggae, and all points in between! While his “acoustic” shows are typically stripped down to basics, Jon has been experimenting with looping technology to layer rhythms and melodies for a one man band experience sure to keep your foot tapping along, and leave you humming a song!

5:30 PMLive music can also be heard outside of Gallery 50 on Friday night, as the duo of Tim Gotwald (flute) and Dan Dropkin (guitar) share their talents on the Main Street sidewalk starting at 5:30.

Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro

1:00 – 3:00 PMThe Ceramic Arts Center will host another workshop from 1:00 to 3:00 on Saturday as Nickole Bricker shows students how to use slab building techniques to create a votive by hand. Holes will be carved through the pots to add detail and charm. The class is intended for children between the ages of 5 and 16, with a cost of $25.00.

LAST CHANCE! This weekend marks the final opportunity to enjoy the abstract artwork of Colleen Clapp and Ed Ramsburg in the “Prism” exhibit on display at Gallery 20 East.

NEW FEATURE! Another new series highlighting the process behind the creation of theatrical works begins on Saturday evening at 6:00 pm, as a cast of actors and actresses from the area will gather inside Gallery 20 East to participate in a read-through of “Round Duffy Square,” a musical with book and lyrics by New York-based playwright Donald Loftus, and music from Waynesboro’s Andrew Sussman. Based on a short-story by Damon Runyon titled “Madame La Gimp” (which was also the inspiration for two movies – “Pocketful of Miracles” and “Lady For a Day”), members of the community are invited to watch and then discuss the work with the creative team. While a few songs will be performed, the read-through is primarily planned to assist in the development of the play upon which the musical will be based.  The creative team of Sussman and Loftus have written two previous musicals, “Abbey Victoria: A Musical Daydream” and “Pollyanna,” both of which were performed in staged settings in New York and Pennsylvania.

Actors and actresses participating in the reading are Kay Yaukey, Elisabeth Turchi, Katie Bradley, Richard Shoap, Scott Hershberger, Jerry Kowallis, Sally Herritt, Lindsey Shoap, Rebecca Reed, Michael DiMercurio, Adam Marinelli, Alex Marinelli and Dan Pittman.

Prism,” the abstract art exhibit comprised of paintings done by Colleen Clapp and Ed Ramsburg (both from Frederick County, Md) remains open at Gallery 20 East this weekend.

Friday night’s music on Center Square will be a bit different than the norm this week as tuba player Zack Grass is scheduled to perform. The Waynesboro-native and recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania will entertain audiences with his low brass sound beginning at 5:30 pm.

Music On The Square

More music can be heard throughout the downtown district on Saturday, with a variety of acts on the line-up.

Nicola Sussman and Gloria Showalter1:00 – 3:00 PM – The duo of Nicola Sussman (vocals and ukulele) and Gloria Showalter (vocals) will be on Center Square starting at 1:00 pm.

Mitch Morrill3:00 – 6:00 PM – At Center Square will be a Destination ARTS! favorite, blues and classic rock singer-guitarist Mitch Morrill. You will not wish to miss this performance.

Music at Gallery 50

1:30 PM – Down the street at Gallery 50, clarinetists Colleen Glenn, Leann Helfrick and Patrick McNamee will team up to make music beginning at 1:30 p.m.

“Second Saturday” Artist Demonstration at Gallery 50

Hilary PapuchisHilaryPapuchisEye2:00 – 4:00 PMJuly 12 is the “Second Saturday” of the month, meaning another featured artist is expected to appear at Gallery 50. Frederick’s Hilary Papuchis will host a painting demonstration from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A 2007 graduate of the University of Maryland-College Park, Papuchis sold 191 original works of art in 2013. She primarily works with acrylic paints. Several pieces of her work are available for sale in Gallery 50.

“Second Saturday” Artist Demonstration at 42 West ARTS

Denny with Elephant1:00 PM – Another demonstration is planned on Saturday at 42 West ARTS. Starting at 1:00 p.m., Denny Bingaman will show people how to make a rubber mold. A native of Waynesboro, Bingaman works with clay to create sculptures of wildlife using his own photographs as a source of reference. Those clay works are then used to render rubber molds for cold casting bronze, copper and other materials.

Main Street Music Sunday Finale

The weekend of Arts and Entertainment concludes on Sunday with a special performance from a few of Franklin County’s most well-known and respected teachers of music. Jerry Kowallis (vocals), Pat McNamee (sax and clarinet), Andrew Sussman (piano), and Herm Hopple (bass) take their turn on Center Square from 2:00 – 4:00 pm.

Destination Arts Gallery Events – July 3-6

“Destination ARTS!” Summer 2014 – Week 2, Thursday, July 3 – Sunday, July 6

July4Following last week’s grand opening, “Destination ARTS!” activities continue in downtown Waynesboro this weekend. Six galleries will be open on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, but they will all be closed on Friday, July 4 in commemoration of the Independence Day holiday.

Gallery 50 West

On Thursday, fine artist Marjorie Tressler returns to Gallery 50 to lead the latest in a series of live painting demonstrations from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Gallery50OpeningAll week, new artwork is featured in Gallery 50. A few of the artists from the area who have their works on display and for sale are Steven Wright, Jennie Avila and Linda Barnhart of Hagerstown, Md, as well as Greencastle’s Eliane Ambrose.

Katrina Hoopes of Waynesboro has created several paintings of dogs that she fell in love with while walking them at the Antietam Humane Society. Half of the proceeds she earns from the sale of this animal-themed art will be donated to AHS. Your purchase could contribute to this very good cause.

42 West Artists Co-Op

42 West Co-Op is featuring the two new exhibits, one is a collection of Abstracts while the other is a grouping of miniatures. Each exhibit is a collection of works from numerous artists.

Pat Beard Weaving300Pat Beard will be providing a special demonstration on Saturday afternoon. She’s set to begin “Weaving on the Loom” inside 42 West ARTS Co-Op at. A juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and the Cumberland Valley Craft Guild, Beard enjoys combining interesting colors with textures and a touch of shiny yarn when weaving on her old-fashioned loom. Each of her scarves and shawls are carefully hand-finished, and visitors of the co-op can learn more about the entire process this weekend.

Positronic CatsThe Positronic Cats take a turn at the mic in the heart of the downtown district. The Greencastle-based acoustic folk duo use simple chord progressions, powerful vocals and intricate mandolin phrasings as a foundation for their songs about love, revenge and the future.
