destination-arts-poster-small1“Destination ARTS!” activities continue in downtown Waynesboro this weekend. Six galleries will be open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Gallery 50 Gallery 50

Located at 50 West Main Street, the largest of the galleries, Gallery 50, is filled with hundreds of pieces of art in many media. There is an extensive painting collection from numerous well know local and region artists in styles from cassic through impressionist to realistic and abstract. Other media include prints, photographs, jewelry, wooden items, books and ceramics.

SallyTruitGallery 20 East – Last Week for “Wild Things” Exhibit

Located at 20 East Main Street, The “Wild Things” exhibit will continue to be open throughout the weekend inside Gallery 20 East. “Wild Things” is a wonderfully whimsical and witty art exhibit to delight adults and children of all ages. Artist Sally Truitt of Lyons, Colorado reveals the secret life of cows and owls, and the dreams of friendly monsters. Eddie Keach Filemyr finds an exuberant jungle in our backyards, with her vivid and passionate paintings of flowers and vegetables. Michalina Eisenberg creates a whole new world with her charming hand made cloth dolls, characters in a comedy of imagination.

Located at 74 West Main Street, Our newest gallery is devoted to the work of eighteen photographers. It is in a recently renovated storefront at 74 West Main Street. "42 West Arts Co-op" membersLocated at 42 West Main Street, 42 West Co-Op is featuring the two exhibits, one is a collection of Abstracts while the other is a grouping of miniatures. Each exhibit is a collection of works from numerous artists. The Co-Op has an extremely wide variety of pieces in a wide array of media, paintings, prints, collage, fabric art, photographs, wind chimes, ceramics, sculpure, and more.

 

Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro

Ceramic Arts Center of WaynesboroLocated at 13 South Church Street, The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro continues to be open to the public every weekend as one of the art galleries featured in Destination ARTS!  A wide variety of beautiful pottery is available for sale on Thursdays 1 – 4 pm, Fridays 5 – 8 pm, Saturdays 12 pm – 6 pm, and Sundays 1 – 4 pm.  For more information about the Center, classes, membership opportunities, and future plans, please email [email protected] or visit the web site.

Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery

Located at 10 East Main Street, The Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery is an independently operated gallery and school. Island FusionOn Center Square

5:00 – 8:00 PM – Anyone visiting downtown Waynesboro on Friday night may feel like they just stepped off a boat in the Caribbean as Nancy and Jody Messich bring their “Island Fusion” sounds back to Center Square. One of last summer’s most popular “Destination ARTS!” performers, the duo covers crowd-pleasing songs such as “I Will Survive,” “Under the Boardwalk” and several of Jimmy Buffett’s greatest hits. Nancy’s steel drums can be heard from 5:00 to 8:00.

5:00 PM – Patric Schlee will again be making music at 42 West ARTS Co-Op beginning at 5:00. Come, listen, or join in by playing a drum or other instrument.

On Center Square

Non-Violent Ferns12:00 – 3:00 – The music of The Non-Violent Ferns could commonly be heard on Center Square last season, and on Saturday, they’ll be making their 2014 “Destination ARTS!” debut. The band is comprised of Erin Regan (lead vocals, keyboard, guitar and ukulele), Dani Kardisco (vocals, ukulele, percussion), Elise Stendal (vocals, guitar, ukulele and percussion), Amanda Bietsch (violin, bass and percussion) and Sammy Bradley (percussion). Their set is scheduled to start at noon.

Tim Franklin (2)3:00 – 6:00 – Tim Franklin steps up to the mic on Center Square. The nomadic singer-guitarist writes songs that are eclectic but anchored in rock music, particularly leaning toward the folk-rock genre. The front-man of Seattle-based band, Pillow Army, Franklin utilizes effects for his solo shows, including looping and percussive strumming techniques, to create a full sound, which can be heard from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Donna Bingaman42 West Arts Co-Op

1:00 – 4:00 PM – Donna Bingaman will be demonstrating her oil painting techniques and answer questions regarding her methods and style.

Mountain Air (1)On Center Square

1:00 – 4:00 – Folk music will be heard on Sunday, as Mountain Air brings the weekend to a close. The trio of Bobbi Smith (vocals and guitar), Bob Murphy (upright bass) and Lisa Donohoe (vocals and mandolin) will be on Center Square between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00 p.m.

Writers Forum

5:00 PM – First Wednesday Writers Group is an open forum for writers of all skill levels and experience to meet and share their work, guidance, and suggestions – held the first Wednesday of every month at 5:00 pm in Gallery 20 East.

A line-up of musicians including Pat McNamee (tenor saxophone and clarinet), Erin McNamee (flute), Kelly West (French horn), Jessica McKinstry (flute), Valerie Merriman (piano), Andrew Sussman (piano) and Herm Hopple (bass) will arrive on Center Square in time to start playing from 5:00 to 8:00.

Pat Beard Weaving30042 West Arts Co-Op

1:00 – 4:00 PMPat Beard will be inside the co-op on Saturday afternoon, demonstrating the spinning and weaving techniques that she uses to create clothing, hats and scarves. A juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and the Cumberland Valley Craft Guild, Beard has been working with yarn and fabrics since the age of 10. Each piece she creates is different, and the process will be on display between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00.

3:00 – 6:00Brad Munn, no stranger to the downtown music scene, will be playing his guitar and fiddle on Center Square from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Fans of Brad’s former band, The Boro Boogie Pickers, or current ensemble, The Lowdown Grasskickers, will enjoy the opportunity to see him fly solo on Saturday.

1:00 – 4:00 PMDrew Adams makes a rare solo performance and his first appearance as part of “Destination ARTS!” A founding member of the band, Good for Nothing (later Dimestore Profit), Drew has since gone on to become the front-man of the highly popular Drew Adams Project, whose rock and roll harmonies can be heard throughout the four-state region on a regular basis. Drew’s music will fill the air on Center Square starting at 1:00, with the weekend of entertainment coming to a close at 4.

Jazz-Jeremy-Pelt-trumpet Renfrew Park & Museum

2:00 – 4:00 PM – Perennial favorite, jazz guitarist Paul Bollenback returns to Renfrew Institute’s annual jazz festival, which spotlights top professional artists each year. Paul will be joined by featured guests artists, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, and Joe Locke on vibes. Joe last appeared at Renfrew’s Jazz Fest in 2003. The quintet is rounded out with Lorin Cohen on bass, and Jaimeo Brown on drums. The concert is followed by an informal question and answer period. Free and open to the public. Wednesday, August 13

Memorial Park

LegoMovieDusk – Waynesboro’s “Movies in the Park” this week showing “The Lego Movie.” Movie-goers should arrive early — before it gets dark — with blankets or chairs to watch the films under the stars. Free admission and free popcorn will be provided. If it rains, the movie will be shown the following Tuesday. Wayne Driscoll, the borough councilman who spearheaded the idea with help from council and the borough’s recreation committee, said the Rotary Club of Waynesboro has sponsored the entire series this year. Jason Bartholow of Whirl Wind Productions is supplying the equipment.

7:00 PM – New Horizon Concert – Regional 50 Member Community Band – Behind the House – Free. The New Horizons Band is a group of senior musicians, celebrating their 17th Anniversary this year. Often referred to as “Hagerstown’s other band,” they number about 50 members and practice Fridays at the Hagerstown YMCA.

5:00 – 8:00 PMJon Ingels, who regularly delivers popular performances as part of “Destination ARTS!,” returns to Center Square on Friday night. His blend of bluegrass, country and rock music can be heard beginning at 5:00 p.m.

5:30 – 8:00 PM – For the second straight weekend, Ben Dennis will provide a soundtrack of Broadway show tunes for anyone enjoying the “Wild Things” exhibit currently on display at Gallery 20 East. He’ll step up to the mic at 5:30 on Friday.

6:00 – 8:00 PM – Just down the street, the duo of Pat McNamee and Erin Regan will be set up outside of Gallery 50 starting at 6:00. McNamee’s collection of woodwind instruments have combined with Regan’s keyboards and vocals to entertain “Destination ARTS!” audiences in the past, and Friday night’s performance should be no different.

42 West Artists Co-Op

5:00 – 8:00 PM – Another “Wine Down Friday” event is scheduled at 42 West ARTS, with Patric Schlee making music on flute and drums from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Saturday, August 16

42 West Artists Co-Op

Donna Bingaman 5 4001:00 PM – Donna Bingaman holds a special painting demonstration at the co-op on Saturday afternoon. The fine artist has had portraits exhibited at art shows held at the Hagerstown Fine Art Museum, and she now proudly displays her work in downtown Waynesboro. Donna will demonstrate her painting techniques with oils at 1:00.

Laura Shindle-Pen & Ink1:00 – 3:00 – Laura Shindle’s pen and ink class continues at the co-op from 1:00 to 3:00. At a cost of $35 (including supplies), participants will learn how to use their pens to create texture, value and mood in a relaxed atmosphere. At the end of the day, they’ll have an impressive piece of artwork to take home and frame.

Students will create small boxes out of slab for their tiny treasures such as rocks & jewelry. Nathanael Chastain, a graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School, will teach students how to improve the quality of their work, properly present it and strengthen their art portfolios as they prepare for the Advanced Placement Art Exam and college admissions.

Kerensa GrayRed copyOn The Square

2:00 PM – The soulful, jazzy voice of Kerensa Gray, which has earned her a popular reputation throughout the region, will be featured on Center Square starting at 2:00 p.m. Gray, winner of the 20th annual Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, has been compared to the likes of Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Krall. She is currently promoting the release of her first CD, entitled Bliss.

Presbyterian Church

3:00 PM – Attend the read-through of another new theatrical production, “The Pardoner’s Tale“, written by Joseph Theis, a 2013 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown. Now, the 19-year-old will have the opportunity to hear his play, based on one of Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, brought to life by a group of local actors and actresses. The reading begins at 3:00 p.m. inside The Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro, located at 105 East Main Street.

Volunteers from the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro invite independent winemakers to participate in a showcase of their creations on Saturday, September 13. Between the hours of 2:00 and 5:00 p.m., you will have the opportunity to provide samples of your product to the general public inside of one of the six art galleries located in the downtown district. Many people already know that an impressive assortment of artwork is on display in Waynesboro each weekend, and it’s not uncommon to hear live music filling the air. But now, we want to celebrate the bottled art being made in our community as well. So, wine-not come down to Main Street and join in on the fun?

RULES AND PROCEDURES

  1. Wine must be produced and bottled by the participant.
  2. Multiple types of wine may be submitted by each participant, but only the winemaker is permitted to pour.
  3. Participant should be able to provide enough wine to pour 1-ounce samples for members of the community over the course of three hours.
  4. Participant must be physically located in the gallery by 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, with wine ready to be poured. Sample cups and tables will be provided by AAGW.
  5. Participant must be willing and able to participate in the festival for the entire three-hour period.
  6. Application forms are to be mailed, to the address listed below, no later than Friday, August 22.
  7. If bringing multiple wines to the event, please print, fill out and mail in the bottom portion of this form for each separate wine people will be tasting.

Tuesday, August 5

6:30 – 8:30 PM – The Waynesboro Police Department will host an event for the 31st annual National Night Out to heighten crime awareness and prevention. Activities will include an emergency vehicle display, bike registration, kickball games, bowling with DUI goggles, music, McGruff the Crime Dog, display booths, car seat installations, free hotdogs, pizza, chips and water.

Music On the Square

AcrossThePond5:00 – 8:00 PM – Audiences are in for a treat on Friday night as the Irish music of Across the Pond fills the air in Center Square. “The most booked Celtic band in Central PA” features Michael Morrison (guitar, flute, mandolin, vocals), Chuck Krepley (fiddle, guitar, vocals) and Dan Diviney (whistles, bodhran, vocals). All members of the trio are passionate about their traditional roots but say their music is also delivered with a modern edge, with a repertoire ranging from hauntingly slow airs to high energy jigs and reels, love ballads and contemporary songs. Across the Pond begins performing at 5:00 p.m.

5:00 – 8:00 PM – J. “Mudcracker” Parks lives and loves music. A 20 year veteran of the local music scene and beyond, he has been shouting the blues and singing out joy for the people. Delivering a mix of original music and eclectic covers, he will surely move you. He will be performing outside of Gallery 50 beginning at 5:00 PM, Friday.

Gallery 20 East Music

HCCStringEnsemble6:00 – 8:00 PM – The Hagerstown Community College String Ensemble will present “Pop Go the Strings” at Gallery 20 East starting at 6:00 on Friday night. Directed by Deborah Stotelmyer, this particular program contains a wide range of music, from Henry Mancini to Billy Joel, to movie favorites from “Hatari!” and “Ghost.”

Gallery 42 Artists Co-Op

1:00 PM – On Saturday, 42 West ARTS is the site of Donna Bingaman’s latest painting demonstration. The fine artist will work with oils beginning at 1:00 p.m. A graduate of the Washington School of Art, Bingaman is an impressionist and realist who blends originality with tradition, winning several awards along the way.

Laura Shindle-Pen & Ink1:00 – 3:00 PM – Also at the co-op on Saturday afternoon, Laura Shindle will be teaching a pen and ink class from 1:00 to 3:00. Participants will learn how to make different marks with their pens to create texture, value and mood, much like what can be seen in a nostalgic black and white photo. The cost for the class is $35, which includes supplies.

First “BLUES JAM” Live!

4:00 PM – Later on Saturday, a group of musicians will congregate on Center Square for the First Destination ARTS! Blues Jam. The line-up includes Brad Munn, Jon Ingels, Kevin Coldsmith, Andrew Sussman and Edgar Myers, with the possibility that other talented entertainers may stop by. The jamming starts at 4:00 p.m.
