“Destination ARTS!” activities continue in downtown Waynesboro this weekend. Six galleries will be open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Tuesday, September 23
Renfrew Museum and Park Visitors Center
7:00 p.m. – David Gibney of Smithsburg, will present “Weatherproofing Historic Windows” in the Renfrew Museum and Park Visitors Center on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7:00 p.m. The lecture is the fifth in a series of talks on historic preservation sponsored by Antietam Restoration School, Waynesboro.
David Gibney has been a restoration craftsman for more than 35 years. His fields of expertise include carpentry, masonry, plastering, decorative plasterwork and timber framing. He has lectured widely and has been published in Period Homes and Fine Homebuilding. He has also appeared on the television shows “Restore America” and “Old Homes Restored.” He is president of Historic Preservation Specialists, Inc., and an instructor for Antietam Restoration School.
The lecture is admission-free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

Gallery 50
1:00 – 4:00 p.m. – Marjorie Tressler will be painting inside of Gallery 50 beginning at 1:00 on Thursday afternoon.
42 West Art Co-Op
1:00 – 3:00 p.m. – The art of painting will also be on display at the 42 West ARTS Co-Op on Thursday, as Laura Shindle demonstrates watercolor techniques from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Born and raised in Hagerstown, Shindle studied at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Fla. before opening a studio in the Greencastle area, where she now teaches and does commission work.

Center Square
5:00 – 8:00 p.m. – Another Singer-Songwriter Showcase is scheduled in Center Square on the evening of Friday, September 26. This time, “Destination ARTS!” favorite, Brad Munn, will be joined by Waylon K. Smith and Josh Morningstar. Morningstar grew up in Washington County (Md.) and has been praised for his ability to create a connection with his audience while performing his powerful songs. The artists in the showcase will sing and tell stories between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00.
Brad Munn is a local musician who has been composing music and lyrics for more then 20 years. Brads compositions range from Bluegrass to rock music. A local favorite, Brad performs with the Boro Boogie Pickers, the Lowdown Grasskickers, and numerous solo acoustic shows.
Waylon K. Smith is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and one half of the acoustic folk duo, The Positronic Cats. In 2007, Waylon had the honor to record two cover songs for the tribute album: “That Horse Yonder: The Songs of Sparklehorse”. His main influences are Roger Waters, Tom Waits, Sparklehorse, and Radiohead. Music that Waylon has either written, or co-written have been used in two feature length movies (“Greencastle” & “Dead Woman’s Hollow”). When not writing music, he likes to work on and make films.
Josh Morningstar grew up in Washington County (Md.) and has been praised for his ability to create a connection with his audience while performing his powerful songs. Morningstar says his musical influences range from Hank Williams Sr. to Big Pun, from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Rakim.

12:00 Noon – Story Telling Time with Miss Fanny Crawford
42 West Art Co-Op
Denny and Donna Bingaman will each lead demonstrations at the co-op on Saturday afternoon.
1:00 p.m. – As a multi-skilled artist, Denny Bingaman uses the animals depicted in his wildlife photography as inspirations for
his clay projects. Beginning at 1:00, he’ll show people how he renders rubber molds for casting cold bronze, copper and other materials before applying a patina and finishing his work with steel wool and wax.
From 1:00 to 3:00, Donna Bingaman will demonstrate how to use oil to paint portraits. A member of several regional art associations, including The American Society of Portrait Artists, Valley Art Association and The Franklin County Art Alliance, Donna strives to capture the personalities of every person she paints.
Center Square
2:00 p.m. – Waylon Smith will return to Center Square on Saturday afternoon to perform with bandmate Jim Taylor as The Positronic Cats. Smith’s guitar and vocals blend with Taylor’s mandolin to form simple chord progressions and intricate phrasings, which serve as the foundation for songs about love, revenge and the future. The duo’s three-hour set starts at 2:00.

2:00 – 4:00 p.m. – Members of the community are invited to go “Jammin’ with Tom McFarland and Andrew Sussman” on Sunday, as the two longtime musicians team up to entertain a crowd on Center Square. The guitarist (McFarland) and pianist (Sussman) are encouraging others to join them in playing jazz standards between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.

Gallery 20 East (Writers Forum)
5:00 p.m. – The First Wednesday Writers will meet. The facilitator for this meeting will be Lanny McClure. He asks that writers bring something that they have written that is not based upon personal experience. Anyone who is interested in writing is welcome. There is no membership required and a person need not have attended a previous meeting.
First Wednesday Writers Group is an open forum for writers of all skill levels and experience to meet and share their work, guidance, and suggestions – held the first Wednesday of every month at 5:00 pm in Gallery 20 East.

Gallery 50
Located at 50 West Main Street, the largest of the galleries, Gallery 50, is filled with hundreds of pieces of art in many media. A wide variety of new artwork is on display at Gallery 50 this weekend. Anyone visiting the gallery will have the opportunity to purchase colorful Bargello wool pillows created by Becky Dietrich, pen and ink drawings from Carrie Dietrich or Kay Ackerman’s latest bracelets. John Mullican’s two new oil paintings, “Wood Duck” and “House Wren,” can now be viewed at the gallery, as well as his most recent terracotta bust, “American Indian.”
Katrina Hoopes has continued to paint a more of her favorite dogs from the Antietam Humane Society, and 50% of her commission sales are donated to AHS.
A new installation, titled “Nature’s Bounty,” is now open in the east window of Gallery 50 this weekend. The show, with work from Waynesboro-based artists such as Marjorie Tressler, Rodney Clark and Virginia Hair, will run through the middle of November.
Gallery 20 East – New Exhibit, “Threads” now open.
A new exhibit opened at Gallery 20 East last Friday. “Threads: Fiber Arts from the Torpedo Factory” features projects completed by Floris Flam, Marla Rudnick and Dianne Harris Thomas. All three artists have work featured in the famed Torpedo Factory Art Center in the Old Town section of Alexandria, Va. on a regular basis. Floris Flam and Dianne Harris Thomas both create “art quilts” while Marla Rudnick creates “knitted” creations using fine wire as thread or yarn.
Gallery 74 @ “Through the Lens”
Located at 74 West Main Street, Our newest gallery is devoted to the work of eighteen photographers. It is in a recently renovated storefront at 74 West Main Street. If you have not stopped in, please do, for a wonderful experience. There are many remarkable, professional photographs offered for sale at very reasonable prices.
42 West Arts Co-Op
Located at 42 West Main Street, 42 West Co-Op is featuring two exhibits, one is a collection of Abstracts while the other is a grouping of miniatures. Each exhibit is a collection of works from numerous artists. The Co-Op has an extremely wide variety of pieces in a wide array of media, paintings, prints, collage, fabric art, photographs, wind chimes, ceramics, sculpure, and more.
Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro
Located at 13 South Church Street, The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro continues to be open to the public every weekend as one of the art galleries featured in Destination ARTS! A wide variety of beautiful pottery is available for sale on Thursdays 1 – 4 pm, Fridays 5 – 8 pm, Saturdays 12 pm – 6 pm, and Sundays 1 – 4 pm. Create a Decorated Lidded Container with Trudy Gembe-Palughi
Sign up this week for the class offered October 9. The workshop provides two hours of “hands on,” step-by-step instruction helping you learn how to make a piece as shown in the photo. The workshop includes all materials, glazes and firings. Minimum group size of four and maximum of eight. You may BYOB and BYOS (bring your own snacks). Cost is $30.00 per person.
Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery
Located at 10 East Main Street, The Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery is an independently operated gallery and school. The CS&G is open during the Destination ARTS! hours with a display gallery of items for sale. They also offer art classes and after-school activities.
