“Destination ARTS!” Summer 2014 – Week 4, Thursday, July 17 – Sunday, July 20
“Destination ARTS!” activities continue in downtown Waynesboro this weekend. New activities include a first ever Singer-Songwriter Showcase and a “read-through” of a new play. Gallery 20 East has the final showing of the “Prism” exhibit. Six galleries will be open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Thursday, July 17
Antietam Historical Association
8:00 AM – The Antietam Historical Association’s July “Third Thursday Biography Breakfast” will be held at Christine’s Cafe on July 17 beginning at 8 AM. Nate Green will lead the discussion about the late Elam R. Sprenkle (1917-2010), a local pattern maker who was well-known for his museum-quality scale replicas of Baldwin “Atlantic” locomotives. Sprenkle’s elder son, Dr. E. Ray Sprenkle, of Baltimore, will be on hand to share some photos and memories.

Gallery 50
Marjorie Tressler is scheduled to start her weekly painting demonstration on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in Gallery 50.
Waynesboro Ceramic Arts Center
6:00 – 9:00 PM – Trudy Gembe-Palughi, local art teacher and Guild member, will lead a Ribbon Wall Pockets Workshop at The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 9:00. Students will create and decorate a ribbon wall pocket made from stoneware clay, and they’ll also have an opportunity to select a glaze for the piece, which will be fired and ready to be picked up after July 31. The cost of the class is $30.00 per person.
Friday, July 18
Music On the Square
5:00 – 8:00 PM – A special Singer-Songwriter Showcase will be featured on Center Square on Friday night, as regulars Brad Munn and Jon Ingels are joined by newcomer Jeremy Tosten taking turns performing original music beginning at 5:00. This is expected to be the first in a series of showcases scheduled throughout the summer, allowing audiences to hear several songs for the first time and get involved with the creative process.
Jeremy Tosten of Coburn, PA performs as a multi instrumentalist and a singer/songwriter in Pennsylvania’s Centre Region. Originally from Waynesboro, his music is rooted in appalachian, folk and gospel music. Currently a member of the Poe Valley Troubadours who are regulars at the Elk Creek Cafe and Ale works in Millhiem PA.
Brad Munn is a local musician who has been composing music and lyrics for more then 20 years. Brads compositions range from Bluegrass to rock music.
Jon Ingels is a guitarist and singer/songwriter from Waynesboro PA. Jon performs with the Bluegrass band The Boro Boogie Pickers as well as the Blues Rock outfit Big Whiskey. In his solo performances Jon draws from all his influences ranging from blues to country, rock to reggae, and all points in between! While his “acoustic” shows are typically stripped down to basics, Jon has been experimenting with looping technology to layer rhythms and melodies for a one man band experience sure to keep your foot tapping along, and leave you humming a song!

5:30 PM – Live music can also be heard outside of Gallery 50 on Friday night, as the duo of Tim Gotwald (flute) and Dan Dropkin (guitar) share their talents on the Main Street sidewalk starting at 5:30.
42 West Artists Co-Op
5:30 PM – Over at 42 West ARTS, Patric Schlee will provide a soundtrack for the co-op’s latest “Wine Down Friday” event.

Waynesboro Historical Society
10:00 AM –The Waynesboro Historical Society will host a presentation on historic window restoration and maintenance at the Oller House, 138 E. Main St., Saturday, July 19, at 10 a.m. Douglas Claytor, a preservation craftsman proficient in carpentry, masonry, plastering, painting and the restoration of windows and doors, will demonstrate a few basic repairs and discuss the advantages of repairs verses replacement with modern vinyl. 3:00 PM – Among the familiar faces set to return to Waynesboro’s downtown district this weekend include the members of Unheard Of (Center Square at 3:00 on Saturday afternoon).
“Through the Lens” – Gallery 74 West
2:00 – 4:00 PM – Demonstration and discussion, “Seeing the Light…,” by professional photographer Rodney Clark. How to capture better images. This will be an outdoor walking event and you are encouraged to bring your camera.
Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro
1:00 – 3:00 PM – The Ceramic Arts Center will host another workshop from 1:00 to 3:00 on Saturday as Nickole Bricker shows students how to use slab building techniques to create a votive by hand. Holes will be carved through the pots to add detail and charm. The class is intended for children between the ages of 5 and 16, with a cost of $25.00.
42 West Artists Co-Op
1:00 – 3:00 – Denny Bingaman is back at 42 West ARTS on Saturday. This week, he’ll be pouring a cold cast bronze. Bingaman’s clay works from last week are used to render rubber molds for cold casting bronze, copper and other materials. After the casting is applied, the artist applies a patina before finishing everything off with wax and steel wool.
1:00 – 4:00 – Donna Bingaman‘s class on oil techniques continues.
Gallery 20 East
LAST CHANCE! This weekend marks the final opportunity to enjoy the abstract artwork of Colleen Clapp and Ed Ramsburg in the “Prism” exhibit on display at Gallery 20 East.
NEW FEATURE! Another new series highlighting the process behind the creation of theatrical works begins on Saturday evening at 6:00 pm, as a cast of actors and actresses from the area will gather inside Gallery 20 East to participate in a read-through of “Round Duffy Square,” a musical with book and lyrics by New York-based playwright Donald Loftus, and music from Waynesboro’s Andrew Sussman. Based on a short-story by Damon Runyon titled “Madame La Gimp” (which was also the inspiration for two movies – “Pocketful of Miracles” and “Lady For a Day”), members of the community are invited to watch and then discuss the work with the creative team. While a few songs will be performed, the read-through is primarily planned to assist in the development of the play upon which the musical will be based. The creative team of Sussman and Loftus have written two previous musicals, “Abbey Victoria: A Musical Daydream” and “Pollyanna,” both of which were performed in staged settings in New York and Pennsylvania.
Actors and actresses participating in the reading are Kay Yaukey, Elisabeth Turchi, Katie Bradley, Richard Shoap, Scott Hershberger, Jerry Kowallis, Sally Herritt, Lindsey Shoap, Rebecca Reed, Michael DiMercurio, Adam Marinelli, Alex Marinelli and Dan Pittman.
