Waynesboro, PA: Destination ARTS! activities continue in Waynesboro, PA with art exhibits and special events scheduled at Gallery 50, 42 West ARTS Co-Op, Through the Lens & Beyond, and the Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro. The galleries feature oil paintings, watercolors, pottery, sculptures, jewelry, photographs, furniture, and more.  This weekend, they will be open on Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. (Gallery 50 and 42 West ARTS Co-Op only), Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

 

Thursday, July 21, 2016 – Gallery Talks: 2 p.m. Gallery 50 – 50 West Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268. MarjorieInWindowCurator and Director Marjorie Tressler will share behind-the-scenes information on the art and history of the artists of Gallery 50. Learn about each artist’s individual technique and even their personal history and artistic inspirations. For more information, call 717-655-2915.

Tressler teaches art locally and has conducted classes at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, where her portraits were featured in a solo show in 1993. She is a former student of the Schuler School of Fine Arts and has studied with several nationally known and prominent local artists over the last 35 years. Tressler has been Gallery 50’s lead curator and director since 2013.

Jon Ingels is a singer/songwriter from Waynesboro, PA and has written songs and performed with several local groups, including the Boro Boogie Pickers. Ingles’ lyrical content is a mixture of storytelling and geographic imagery backed by folk chord patterns, simple melodies, and blues-driven rhythm.

 

Friday, July 22, 2016 – Book Signing with Dr. Ed Koterba Morgret: 5-8 p.m. Gallery 50 – 50 West Ed MorgretMain Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268. Visit Gallery 50 on Friday for a special book signing with Dr. Ed Koterba Morgret, author of “The Essential Ed Koterba: A Most Outstanding Newspaperman.” The book chronicles Koterba’s unlikely rise to become a syndicated columnist in Washington, D.C. during the 1950s. Students of journalism and fans of the 1950s will delight in the rich details provided by the author who also happens to be Koterba’s son. Morgret, son of Ed Koterba, was born in Chambersburg, PA in 1952. He holds a BA from Clemson University, an MA from the Catholic University of America, and a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was awarded the West Virginia School Psychologist of the year in 2005 and served as president of the school’s Psychologists Association from 2009 to 2010. Today he lives in Hilton Head Island where he enjoys playing jazz piano and tennis.

Mountain Ride, a Pennsylvania bluegrass band fancying both progressive and traditional facets of the genre will be playing in Center Square. Dietrich has collected and sung folk songs from England, Scotland, and the United States for many years. She is an active artist and writer and owned and operated A Little Gallery in Mont Alto, PA for 20 years.

A graduate of the Washington School of Arts, Bingaman is a juried member of the Oil Painters of America and has won several awards for her work. In 2002, she was featured in a solo show at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown, MD. Her portraits are currently displayed in the Chambersburg Court House and Annex as well as in private collections.

Rod Meyer and his wife Karri Benedict will be working in clay and demonstrating how they create stoneware and decorative Raku pottery. Rod Meyer and Karri Benedict have been making pottery together for more than 37 years. Their work shows a great respect for fine craftsmanship and their sense of design is strongly influenced by function. They produce a full line of pieces for the home that are lead-free and dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe. They are both juried members of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and own and operate Willow Creek Pottery.

Members of the Songwriters Forum will be performing original songs written as part of the group’s writing exercises in the newly opened Music Makers Center. Beard has been a woodworker for the past 50 year and has exhibited in art shows and galleries since 1966. He is a graduate of St. John’s College and the University of Florida and is a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsman, the Lincoln Highway Heritage Group, and a member of the Woodworking Advisory Board.

By combining yarns of different colors and textures, Bead is able to create unique and beautiful pieces using an “old-fashioned” loom. After the weaving, each panel is washed before being finished by hand. Bear has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Florida and is a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and the Cumberland Valley Craft Guild. Each week, a member of the musical community is featured in performance in the Gallery. Wine and light refreshments will be available.

This week, singer, songwriter, and guitarist Ron Nicodemus will be performing a medley of musical genres in Gallery 50. His style includes blues, rock, reggae, and even a little country. Born and raised in Gettysburg, Nicodemus has played in hundreds of gigs over the past two and a half decades, honing his skills by covering an eclectic variety of styles. The popular Irish music of Across the Pond will be featured in Center Square this Friday. The band features Michael Morrison (guitar, mandolin, flue and vocals), Chuck Krepley (fiddle, banjo, vocals), and Dan Diviney (whistles, bodhran, vocals). Formed in late 2010, Across the Pond was named one of the Top 20 Celtic folk bands world-wide by Marc Gunn in 2014 and is considered the most booked Celtic band in Central PA. Nature enthusiast, Denny Bingaman will demonstrate his process of making decorative gourds. Visitors will be shown his techniques of carving, burning, and dyeing the gourds. Denny Bingaman is a native of Waynesboro, PA who uses wildlife imagery as a source of inspiration for much of his art, including photography, gourd carving, and sculpting.

Saturday, July 9, 2016 – Leather Handcrafting: 1-3 p.m. 42 West ARTS Co-Op & Gallery – 42 Barb Peshkin 2West Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268. 42 West ARTS Co-Op member, Barb Peshkin, will be working in leather, handcrafting medieval-style journals and sketch pads. Peshkin’s art focuses mostly on leather crafting, calligraphy and Medieval-style illumination. She also works in gouache paints. After working in the Tuscarora School District for 35 years, she retired and worked for the Council for the Arts in Chambersburg, PA for three years. She is currently a member of the Cumberland Valley Craftsmen Guild and occasionally teaches adult and children’s classes.

Murphy is an award-winning pen and ink artist and the owner of DM Designs, LLC, a graphic design firm specializing in local business promotions. Murphy is a graduate of the Frederick Community College and has worked in television production and pre-press design. He markets his fine art pen and ink and watercolor art in galleries in Boonsboro, Greencastle, and Hagerstown. He has also illustrated civil war books and regularly participates in plein-air events, including Frederick County Maryland’s Barnstormers event which benefits the Frederick County Landmarks Foundation.

Peshkin’s art focuses mostly on calligraphy and Medieval-style illumination. She also works in gouache paints and does leather-crafting. After working in the Tuscarora School District for 35 years, she retired and worked for the Council for the Arts in Chambersburg, PA for three years. She is currently a member of the Cumberland Valley Craftsmen Guild and occasionally teaches adult and children’s classes.

Mountain Air is comprised of Bobbi Smith (guitar and vocals), Bob Murphy (upright bass), and Lisa Donohoe (mandolin and vocals). Smith and Donohoe began performing together as members of the Blue Ridge String Band and later, Back Porch Music in the 1990s. When they formed their own group, Mountain Air was born and Murphy joined in 2009. The band performs at festivals, private concerts, wineries, special occasions, and art galleries.

On June 17, the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro will be MusicMakers_Logo_vertical-Scelebrating the fourth anniversary of the launch of Destination ARTS! Since July 2013, Destination ARTS! has featured the work of hundreds of artists and musicians, and transformed Waynesboro’s Main Street with galleries and live music every weekend. To mark this event, AAGW and the Cumberland Valley School of Music will be hosting an Open House to celebrate the launch of Music Makers: Our Community Music Center. This collaboration will provide a unique location for music forums, workshops, classes, jam sessions, and live performances. Destination ARTS! artists such as Marjorie Tressler, Donna Mitchell, Carol Miller, Donna Mason, and Marti Yeager will be on hand for a meet and greet and with art from private collections that have never been displayed. Saturday, June 18, 2016 – Cold-Cast Demonstration: 1-3 p.m. 42 West ARTS Co-Op & Gallery – 42 West Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268. Co-op member, Denny Bingaman, will be using a rubber mold made from ColdCasta previous sculpture of a dragonfly in clay to create a new piece using the cold cast method. Denny Bingaman is a native of Waynesboro, PA who uses wildlife imagery as a source of inspiration for much of his art, including photography, gourd carving, and sculpting. Bingaman will use his clay sculptures to render rubber molds for cold-casting sculptures in bronze and copper. After casting, a patina is applied and finished off with steel wool and an application of wax.

The Waynesboro Children’s Theatre Troupe will present “Down Memory Lane” in honor of the troupe’s 20th anniversary. They will be performing musical numbers from each of the sixteen shows they have presented over that time period. Performances include “If I Only Had a Brain” from The Wizard of Oz, “We go Together” from Grease, as well as other familiar show tunes. David Wayne Bowers has been performing magic since 1996. He is a member of The Society of American Magicians and was recently installed as the National President at the S.A.M Annual Convention in Philadelphia. He is also a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and the Magicians Alliance of Eastern States. He has performed in various “King Magic Ring” presentations, including “The Festival of Magic” at the Maryland Theater and the Apollo Theater in Martinsburg, WV. Bowers has also appeared at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. for their children’s day festival. “Miss Penelope” (Judy Bowers) is a retired WASD teacher who has 35 years of experience working with children. In addition to creating balloon animals, she also assists with the magic shows.

Wednesday, June 8, 2016 – FREE Oil Painting Classes: 12-3 p.m. 42 West ARTS Co-Op & Gallery – 42 West Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268. Donna Bingaman will be offering free Donna Bingaman 5 400painting classes every Wednesday in June starting June 8. Students of all ability levels will learn how to paint in oil or acrylic, using color, values, and composition. Register at 42 West ARTS Co-Op or call 717-762-8394.

A graduate of the Washington School of Arts, Bingaman is a juried member of the Oil Painters of America and has won several awards for her work. In 2002, she was featured in a solo show at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown, MD. Her portraits are currently displayed in the Chambersburg Court House and Annex as well as in private collections.

Curator and Director Marjorie Tressler will be starting a new series of gallery talks in Gallery 50 every Thursday. Each week will feature a discussion on the various regional and local artists featured in Gallery 50, including information on their background, latest works, and art genre. Tressler teaches art locally and has conducted classes at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, where her portraits were featured in a solo show in 1993. She is a former student of the Schuler School of Fine Arts and has studied with several nationally known and prominent local artists over the last 35 years. Tressler has been Gallery 50’s lead curator and director since 2013.

Gray is the winner of the 20th Annual Billie Holiday Vocal Competition and one of the area’s most popular performers, Gray is often compared to jazz icons such as Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, and Diana Krall. She has shared the stage with artists such as Stellar Award Winner Isaiah Thomas and opened for Grammy and Dove award winners CeCe Winans and Vickie Winans.

Wayne Driscoll, a member of the band Lucky Punk, will be playing in Gallery 50 on Friday. Driscoll will be bringing his bold and energetic approach to the electric guitar. Beard has been a woodworker for the past 50 year and has exhibited in art shows and galleries since 1966. Starting Monday, June 13, all artists and artisans are invited to join a new monthly discussion group aimed to connect one another. The group will provide a fun and convenient social opportunity for anyone wanting to share ideas, art techniques, upcoming regional show dates, receive and provide mentoring, and inspire one another. Zentangle is the method of creating beautiful images from repetitive and structured patterns that is said to increase focus and creativity. Along with Zentangle art, Shindle is an accomplished painter, printmaker, and teacher with a studio in Greencastle, PA. She studied art at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL and has studied with many tutors.

Rod Meyer and his wife Karri Benedict will be working in clay and demonstrating how they create stoneware and decorative Raku pottery. Rod Meyer and Karri Benedict have been making pottery together for more than 37 years. Their work shows a great respect for fine craftsmanship and their sense of design is strongly influenced by function. They produce a full line of functional pieces for the home that is lead-free and dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe. They are both juried members of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and own and operate Willow Creek Pottery.

Monday, June 13, 2016 – Artists’ Connection Group: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Gallery 50 – 50 West Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268. Starting Monday, June 13, all artists and artisans are invited to join a new monthly discussion group aimed to connect one another. The group will provide a fun and convenient social opportunity for anyone wanting to share ideas, art techniques, upcoming regional show dates, receive and provide mentoring, and inspire one another. Participants are encouraged to bring their latest art projects for those in attendance to view and enjoy. There are no fees or club/membership requirements. The galleries feature oil paintings, watercolors, pottery, sculptures, jewelry, photographs, furniture, and more. Most art is available for sale and there is no charge for admission to the galleries.
