Waynesboro, PA, March 9, 2016: Destination ARTS! activities continue in Waynesboro, PA with art exhibits and special events scheduled at Gallery 50, 42 West ARTS Co-Op, Through the Lens & Beyond, and the Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro. The galleries feature oil paintings, watercolors, pottery, sculptures, jewelry, photographs, furniture, and more. All events are free unless otherwise indicated. This weekend, they will be open on Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. (Gallery 50 and 42 West ARTS Co-Op only), Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Marjorie TresslerGallery 50’s Curator/Director Marjorie Tressler will be presenting her weekly oil painting demonstrations from 2 to 4 p.m. in Gallery 50 featuring a large landscape. Tressler teaches art locally and has conducted classes at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, where her portraits were featured in a solo show in 1993. She is a former student of the Schuler School of Fine Arts and has studied with several nationally known and prominent local artists over the last 35 years.

 

Donna BingamanPortraintDirector and co-founder of 42 West ARTS Co-Op, Donna Bingaman, will be demonstrating the portrait painting of “Coria” from 1 to 3 p.m. Bingaman teaches oil painting directly in the studio where students learn how to apply oil paint to achieve a beautiful painting of their own. She has painted many award-winning portraits, five of which are exhibited at the Chambersburg Court House and Annex as well as many others in private homes and collections.

Jazz singer Kerensa Gray will be performing at Gallery 50 (50 West Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268) from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Winner of the 20th Annual Billie Holiday Vocal Competition and of the area’s most popular performers, Gray is often compared to jazz icons such as Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, and Diana Krall. She has shared the stage with artists such as Stellar Award Winner Isaiah Thomas and opened for Grammy and Dove award winners CeCe Winans and Vickie Winans.

In 42 West ARTS Co-Op, Patric Schlee in playing the flute, drums, and other instruments in a relaxed atmosphere from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The public is invited to join in. While there, be sure to sign up for Schlee’s didgeridoo class.

If you enjoy nature photography, make sure to stop by 42 West ARTS Co-Op (42 West Main Street, Waynesboro, PA 17268) on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Gallery co-founder Denny Bingaman will showcase a slideshow his collection of nature and wildlife photography. A native of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, many photos from Bingaman’s collection are feature local birds and wildlife.

Hollis Mentzer
In the same gallery from 1 to 3 p.m., Hollis Mentzer will conduct a paper making workshop. Participants will make several sheets of paper, experimenting with additions and variations in weight and design. Paper will be available to pick up on Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m. after it has dried overnight. Mentzer has been paper making for over 20 years and has won several awards through the Franklin County Arts Alliance.

The west window gallery theme is “Winter White” featuring Gallery 50’s “Muse”  “Samantha the Snow Princess”, and beautiful winter scenes created by Virginia Hair , Liz Hurley and Donna Mitchell.. The east window gallery is presenting “It’s a Wonderful Still Life” with art by Brad Clever, Marjorie Tressler, and David Buckley Good. The main gallery is showcasing “Fin, Feathers and Fur”, featuring artist Carol Wilks and Beth De’ Louiselle.

Through the Lens & BeyondThrough the Lens & Beyond features fine art photography, illustrations, oil and watercolor paintings, and 2-dimensional art. Custom framing, classes, and seminars plus a “Day Rental” photography studio will also be offered.

The Rolling Coyotes300
Steve Warner and the Rolling Coyotes will be bringing their unique harmonies and textured instrumentation to Gallery 50 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The group performs Americana acoustic-based music that touches on many genres, including folk, country, string band, jazz, and rock. The group has performed at many prominent events, festivals, listening rooms, and house concerts. They always assure a toe-tapping, crowd-pleasing good time.

On Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m., 42 West ARTS Co-Op co-founder Denny Bingaman will be demonstrating the steps in creating a cold cast metal sculpture by using a rubber mold that he created from one his original pieces of art work.

Deborah WoodsAlso from 1 to 3 p.m. in the same gallery, Deborah Woods, creator of Boggy Hollow Primitives, will demonstrate her self-taught technique of creating a primitive doll, including how to stuff and sew the doll, and sculpting the face. Woods’ pieces have been featured at the Twin Lakes Arts and Heritage Festival, the Westmoreland County Fair, and numerous other Western Pennsylvania venues. All of her pieces are handmade and individually crafted with no two dolls exactly the same.

WriteNowThe Destination ARTS! Writers Forum, will hold its monthly meeting in the conference room at 32 West Main Street, Waynesboro, PA, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  The theme for the March meeting will be either “Seasons of Life” or Memories of Easter. To quote Lonnae O’Neal of the Washington Post, “Life is seasonal, and every time in our life is finite and distinct, no matter how long it lasts.” While each Writers Forum has a theme to consider for the next time, after the initial ‘round and round’ as members read their contributions, they will then read any subject they’re currently working on – be it prose, poetry, memoirs or story-telling.  Interested writers are invited to join the group which meets from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Inquiries may be addressed to Jerry Kowallis at 717-352-8059 or email [email protected] .

Tim Franklin

Tim Franklin

Tim Franklin (vocals and guitar) will be performing in Gallery 50 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm.  Tim is a nomadic singer/songwriter/guitarist and frontman for the Seattle chamber rock band Pillow Army. His songs are eclectic, but anchored in rock music; particularly leaning toward the folk-alternative rock sound. As a solo performer, he utilizes effects, looping, and percussive strumming techniques to create a surprisingly full sound.

David Buckley Good - painting (1)Also in Gallery 50 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, David Buckley Good will be on hand to talk about his paintings, which are currently being featured in the gallery. David is a master landscape artist who has shown his work in many major cities. At the invitation of Les Amis de la Grande Vigne, David lived and worked in in the medieval city of Dinan, France during the month of Oct 2001. While in Dinan, he was their artist in  residence and consequently  was featured in American Artist magazine. He is a teacher at the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, MD and studied at the Arts Student League in New York City.

This new event will feature Despina Léos Chocolates, Hauser Estate Wines, and live jazz from Kerensa Gray, a former Billie Holiday Award winner. The gallery will also be offering special discounts on photography and art.

Scott and Laurie Matlock2“The Flying Matlocks”, featuring Scott and Laurie Matlock will be performing at Gallery 50 from 5:30 PM to 8:00 pm.  In addition to their work as a duo, Scott (vocals and fiddle) and Laurie (vocals and guitar) are well known throughout the area for their work with Soleil.  Scott also performs with the popular bluegrass group Mountain Ride

Art Demonstration Saturday!

Galleries open 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

PatBeardPat Beard will demonstrate weaving on the loom from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at 42 West ARTS Co-op. Pat began knitting at age 10 and has loved working with yarn and fabrics ever since. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Florida and is a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and the Cumberland Valley Craft Guild. By combining interesting colors with textures and a touch of shiny yarn, Pat weaves fabric on old-fashioned looms. Although a number of pieces are woven from the same warp threads, each piece is different. After the weaving, each panel is washed before sewing on old industrial machines. Traditional scarves and shawls are carefully hand finished.

AcrossThePondThe popular Irish music of Across the Pond will be featured in Gallery 50 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. “The most booked Celtic band in Central PA” features Michael Morrison (guitar, mandolin, flue and vocals), Chuck Krepley (fiddle, banjo, vocals), and Dan Diviney (whistles, bodhran, vocals). All members of the trio are passionate about their traditional roots but say their music is also delivered with a modern edge, with a repertoire ranging from hauntingly slow aires to high energy jig and reels, love ballads, and contemporary songs.

 

David Buckley Good - painting (1)Also in Gallery 50, David Buckley Good will be on hand to talk about his paintings, which are currently being featured in the gallery. David is a master landscape artist who has shown his work in many major cities. At the invitation of Les Amis de la Grande Vigne, David lived and worked in in the medieval city of Dinan, France during the month of Oct 2001. While in Dinan, he was their artist in residence and consequently was featured in American Artist magazine. He is a teacher at the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, MD and studied at the Arts Student League in New York City.

Her work consists of watercolors, oils, pen and ink, printmaking and more. Her studio is in the Greencastle area where she teaches and does commission work.

From 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday as Dearest Home brings authentic Civil War era music to life! You’ll experience the enthusiasm, pathos and patriotism of the period through tunes and lyrics that still ring true. You’ll be able to sing and clap along, and may even find yourself dancing! Based in Gettysburg, PA and appearing dressed in period costume, the band includes Chris Barnabei (acoustic bass), Chuck Krepley (fiddle, minstrel banjo, and vocals), Stephen Folkemer (concertina, and piano, and vocals), Margaret Folkemer (penny whistle and vocals), and Beth Folkemer (guitar, dulcimer and vocals). Expereince “authenticity and originality in perfect harmony.”

Art Demonstration Saturday!

Barb PeshkinBarb Peshkin will demonstrate creating leather book covers and Medieval style illuminations at 42 West Arts Co-op from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. After working as an art teacher in the Tuscarora School District for 35 years, Barbara Peshkin retired and took a job at the Council for the Arts in Chambersburg, PA for three years. Since then she has taught children through the Arts Express Program sponsored by the Arts Council. She has also taught various art forms to adults at many venues, especially calligraphy.

She is currently a member of the Cumberland Valley Craftsmen Guild, and is occasionally inolved with the Chambersburg Art Alliance. Her own art is mostly focusing on calligraphy and Medieval style illumination. She works usually with gouache paints. She also makes Medieval style leather bound journals. She likes to experiment with many art forms, and loves to take classes to learn how to use various art media and techniques.

WRITER'S FORUMThe Destination ARTS! Writers Forum, sponsored by the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro, will hold its monthly meeting at a new location: 32 E Main Street, Waynesboro, PA, on from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The theme for the February meeting will be “Resolutions and New Beginnings”. After the initial ‘round and round’ as members read their contributions, they will then read any subject they’re currently working on – be it prose, poetry, memoirs or story-telling. At the January meeting, Henry L. Mencken (Baltimore’s “Bad Boy”) was quoted saying, “Writers, as one were to discover from long experience with them – a large part of it of the hard, home-made variety – are born with some strange, built in compulsion that makes them write for the same reason that roosters crow and hens lay eggs.” Interested writers are invited to join the group. Art Demonstration Saturday!

Rod MeyerAt 42 West Arts Co-op, Rod Meyer will be working in clay on the potters’ wheel from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.  Using simple elegance of form and pure color he creates useful objects, which are pleasing to look at, hold, and ultimately use. He also produces Raku-fired vessels, bowls and lamps, working in two distinct glazes- a copper metallic in both matte and luster, and a clear crackle with polychrome highlights. The Raku is largely decorative and more fragile than the functional ware, but the crackle glazed vessels can be sealed to hold water.  Both Rod and his partner Karri Benedict are juried members of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

A  Destination ARTS!  Songwriters Showcase will be presented from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Frank’s Pizza, 40 West Main Street (on Center Square), Waynesboro, PA .   Over the past year, a group of songwriters have been meeting every month at a gallery in Waynesboro.  Prior to each meeting, a new title is selected, and then each member is encouraged to write an original song.  Thus at this event, each set will feature songs with the same title but written and performed in each participant’s unique style.  Song titles to be performed in this showcase include “Most of the Time,” “You Don’t Know Me,” “Then There’s Tomorrow,” and “Shoes”. Songwriters participating will include John Dolly, Jon Ingels, Brian Forberger, Tim Franklin,Ethan Larsh, Tresa Paul, Steve and Sharon Rost, Andrew Sussman, and Michael Webber.

Songwriters Forum meeting - Tresa Paul, Brian Forberger, Sharon Rost, Steve RostA  Destination ARTS!  Songwriters Showcase will be presented from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Frank’s Pizza, 40 West Main Street (on Center Square), Waynesboro, PA .   Over the past year, a group of songwriters have been meeting every month at a gallery in Waynesboro.  Prior to each meeting, a new title is selected, and then each member is encouraged to write an original song.  Thus at this event, each set will feature songs with the same title but written and performed in each participant’s unique style.  Song titles to be performed in this showcase include “Most of the Time,” “You Don’t Know Me,” “Then There’s Tomorrow,” and “Shoes”. Songwriters participating will include John Dolly, Jon Ingels, Brian Forberger, Tim Franklin,Ethan Larsh, Ginny Gill, Ron Nicodemus, Tresa Paul, Steve and Sharon Rost, and Andrew Sussman.

Gallery 50 winter shotGallery 50 is presenting three new shows celebrating  the Winter season. The west window gallery theme is “Winter White” featuring Gallery 50’s “Muse”  “Samantha the Snow Princess”, and beautiful winter scenes created by Virginia Hair , Liz Hurley and Donna Mitchell.. The east window gallery is presenting “It’s a Wonderful Still Life” with art by Brad Clever, Marjorie Tressler, and David Buckley Good. The main gallery is showcasing “Fin, Feathers and Fur”, featuring artist Carol Wilks and Beth De’ Louiselle.

Featured artists are Andy Smetzer (photographer), Donna Bingaman (oil painting), Lorie Linthicum (creative pottery), Tom McFarland (painting), Denny Bingaman (photography), Rod and Karri Benedict (pottery), Ed Beard (wood burning), Hollis Mentzer (nature printing), Laura Shindle (painting), Bob North (tinsmithing), Jennifer Caldwell (silver jewelry), and Debra Woods (dolls and folk art).

Through the Lens & BeyondThrough the Lens & Beyond features fine art photography, illustrations, oil and watercolor paintings, and 2-dimensional art. Custom framing, classes, and seminars plus a “Day Rental” photography studio will also be offered.

Mike Minster (2)Gallery 20 East is featuring the painting and ceramics of Michael Minster. The show will present a collection of his work over the past 18 years. Minster’s art is abstract, colorful, animated, decorative, and thoughtful.. He notes his influences as “Picasso, Warhol, Kitsch art, and street art to name a few”. January 24 will mark the close of this show and the final Destination ARTS! exhibit at this location.
