“Destination ARTS!” activities continue in downtown Waynesboro this weekend. Six galleries will be open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“Destination ARTS!” Summer 2014 – Week 15, Thursday, October 2 – Sunday, October 5
This weekend marks the 15th and final week of the “Destination ARTS!” summer schedule. Six galleries will be open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After Sunday, the music and entertainment moves inside on a regular basis throughout the winter.
Wednesday, October 1
Writers Forum
5:00 p.m. – The First Wednesday Writers will meet at 5 PM on Wednesday October 1, at Gallery 20, located at 20 East Main Street, Waynesboro. The facilitator for this meeting will be Lanny McClure. He asks that writers bring something that they have written that is not based upon personal experience. Anyone who is interested in writing is welcome. No membership is required and a person need not have attended a previous meeting.
Thursday, October 2
Gallery 50
1:00 – 4:00 p.m. – Marjorie Tressler will be painting inside of Gallery 50 beginning at 1:00 on Thursday afternoon.
Friday, October 3
Center Square
6:00 – 7:00 p.m. – Friday night’s entertainment will be provided by the Tri-State Jitterbugs. The group of retro swing-dancers will show off their fancy footwork on Center Square.
42 West Art Co-Op
5:00 – 8:00 p.m. – Friday night’s music will also feature Patric Schlee’s flute and drums at the 42 West ARTS Co-Op starting at 5:00.

7:00 – 10:00 PM – Friday Night Bluegrass Jam – Admission $4.00.
Saturday, October 4 – Main Street Market Day
Whole Downtown Waynesboro
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Mainstreet Waynesboro’s Tenth Annual Market Day celebration is scheduled in the downtown district. Not only will the special occasion feature more than 100 food, craft and specialty vendors (including “Destination ARTS!” galleries), but a full line-up of music and dancing is planned as well.
Saint Andrew School and Parish
Center Square
9:00 – 11:00 a.m. – Rich Fehle, guitarist and singer, gets the day started with a performance on Center Square.
11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – Waynesboro’s own The Drew Adams Project is Drew Adams on lead guitar, Josh “Duff” Sanders on guitar, Pat Henson on drums, Adam Brosious on bass and all on vocals.
1:30 – 2:00 p.m. – The Tri-State Jitterbugs return to the square for a half hour of dancing and swinging.
2:15 – 4:00 p.m. – The band known as Center of Gravity finishes off the festival between 2:15 and 4:00 p.m.
42 West Art Co-Op
Two artist demonstrations are planned inside of the 42 West ARTS Co-Op while Market Day is being held outside.
1:00 – 4:00 p.m. – Hollis Mentzer will explain the hand paper making process he uses for his art work. A retired teacher, Mentzer conveys the simplicity of natural forms using dried and compressed plant specimens. He says composition and color are the challenges in presentation. Saturday’s demonstration will be offered from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a repeat appearance set for the same time on Sunday afternoon.
1:00 – 4:00 p.m. – Also at the co-op, Donna Bingaman returns to show a new crop of students how to use oil to paint portraits, still-life, genre and sculptures. The graduate of the Washington School of Art will start working with her brushes at 1:00 p.m.
Sunday, October 5
Center Square
2:00 – 4:00 p.m. – On Sunday, the second summer of “Destination ARTS!” musical performances comes to a close when the popular duo known as Strung Tight take Center Square. Eric and Kate Avey have been making music together for more than a decade and formed their most recent ensemble in 2013. Since then, they’ve taken their guitar, bass and harmonies to venues across the four-state region, entertaining a variety of audiences along the way.

Gallery 50
Located at 50 West Main Street, the largest of the galleries, Gallery 50, is filled with hundreds of pieces of art in many media. A wide variety of new artwork is on display at Gallery 50 this weekend. Anyone visiting the gallery will have the opportunity to purchase colorful Bargello wool pillows created by Becky Dietrich, pen and ink drawings from Carrie Dietrich or Kay Ackerman’s latest bracelets. John Mullican’s two new oil paintings, “Wood Duck” and “House Wren,” can now be viewed at the gallery, as well as his most recent terracotta bust, “American Indian.”
Katrina Hoopes has continued to paint a more of her favorite dogs from the Antietam Humane Society, and 50% of her commission sales are donated to AHS.
A new installation, titled “Nature’s Bounty,” is now open in the east window of Gallery 50 this weekend. The show, with work from Waynesboro-based artists such as Marjorie Tressler, Rodney Clark and Virginia Hair, will run through the middle of November.
Gallery 20 East – New Exhibit, “Threads” now open.
A new exhibit opened at Gallery 20 East last Friday. “Threads: Fiber Arts from the Torpedo Factory” features projects completed by Floris Flam, Marla Rudnick and Dianne Harris Thomas. All three artists have work featured in the famed Torpedo Factory Art Center in the Old Town section of Alexandria, Va. on a regular basis. Floris Flam and Dianne Harris Thomas both create “art quilts” while Marla Rudnick creates “knitted” creations using fine wire as thread or yarn.
Gallery 74 @ “Through the Lens”
Located at 74 West Main Street, Our newest gallery is devoted to the work of eighteen photographers. It is in a recently renovated storefront at 74 West Main Street. If you have not stopped in, please do, for a wonderful experience. There are many remarkable, professional photographs offered for sale at very reasonable prices.
42 West Arts Co-Op
Located at 42 West Main Street, 42 West Co-Op is featuring two exhibits, one is a collection of Abstracts while the other is a grouping of miniatures. Each exhibit is a collection of works from numerous artists. The Co-Op has an extremely wide variety of pieces in a wide array of media, paintings, prints, collage, fabric art, photographs, wind chimes, ceramics, sculpure, and more.
Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro
Located at 13 South Church Street, The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro continues to be open to the public every weekend as one of the art galleries featured in Destination ARTS! A wide variety of beautiful pottery is available for sale on Thursdays 1 – 4 pm, Fridays 5 – 8 pm, Saturdays 12 pm – 6 pm, and Sundays 1 – 4 pm. Create a Decorated Lidded Container with Trudy Gembe-Palughi
Sign up this week for the class offered October 9. The workshop provides two hours of “hands on,” step-by-step instruction helping you learn how to make a piece as shown in the photo. The workshop includes all materials, glazes and firings. Minimum group size of four and maximum of eight. You may BYOB and BYOS (bring your own snacks). Cost is $30.00 per person.
Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery
Located at 10 East Main Street, The Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery is an independently operated gallery and school. The CS&G is open during the Destination ARTS! hours with a display gallery of items for sale. They also offer art classes and after-school activities. Throughout the month of September, the work of stained glass artist Leon Adler will be on display at The Contemporary School of the Arts & Gallery.
