NEW this weekend – the first ever Destination ARTS! Magic Show, featuring the Magic of David Wayne and Balloons by Miss Penelope!

David Wayne Bowers has been performing magic for the past 17 years. He has appeared at the Children’s Day Festival at the World Bank in Washington DC, The Festival of Magic at the Maryland Theater, Holiday Abracadabra at the Apollo Theater, Funfest at the Totem Pole Playhouse, Kidfest at the Shriner’s Auditorium in Harrisburg, and Give Kids the World Village in Orlando, Florida. In addition to assisting with the magic show, “Miss Penelope” will be creating balloon animals for the children.

An initiative of the non-profit Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro (AAGW), Destination ARTS! features over 1,000 pieces of art for sale in seven art galleries and eight storefront windows within a two-block radius on Main Street in Waynesboro.  Over 100 artists and artisans are represented, and the galleries feature paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, photography, and fiber arts.

As visitors walk down Main Street, they will encounter illustrious artists who are visiting from the past, including the Dutch master Vincent van Gogh and French Impressionist artists Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot, all recreated on mannequins by area artists. In addition, new artist demonstrations and musical performances are often added at the last minute.

The event is open every Friday 5–8 pm, Saturday 11 am– 6 pm, and Sunday 12 pm– 4 pm through October 27. All activities are open to the public and free of charge. More information is available at www.artsalliancegw.org or by emailing [email protected].

The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro is now open and inviting new memberships!  Just five short months after the Nicodemus Center for Ceramic Studies launched a fund drive to establish a ceramic arts facility at 13 S. Church Street in Waynesboro, it will begin offering pottery classes to both adults and children.  Members of the Center will have open access to the nearly 2,500 square foot facility, which includes six potter wheels, a 10 electric kiln, and a gas kiln to be added in the near future.

The first class offered will be, “Coaster and Pendant Making Workshop for Kids,” with Nickole Bricker.   Scheduled for September 28, from noon to 3:00 p.m., budding potters between the ages of 8 and 13 will learn pottery fundamentals, decorate coasters, and make pendants from a variety of materials. The fee is $25 per child and includes all supplies.  With a smile, Bricker explained why she’s passionate about introducing pottery to the younger set, “It’s a way to help kids appreciate nature and art and still get their hands dirty.”  Bricker will offer a second class, “Pinch Pot Workshop for Kids”, on October 12, from noon to 3:00 pm.  The fee for this workshop is also $25.

An “Introduction to Ceramics Studio” class for adults will be also be  offered .  During this hands-on class with instructor Mary Ashe-Mahr, participants will learn to make hand built pieces, throw on a wheel, and trim and glaze finished pieces. This class is offered over two Saturdays, October 5 and October 19, from noon to 4:30 pm.  The fee is $175 and includes materials, glazing, and firing.  Ashe-Mahr will offer the same class on Sundays, October 6 and October 20, also from noon to 4:30 pm.

Another option is also possible.  James Smith and Tom McFarland will offer an “Introduction to Ceramics Studio” class for adults at Penn State Mont Alto, General Studies Building, Room 008, on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9:00 pm, October 2 through November 6. The fee is $200 and includes all materials.

Smith, director of the Ceramic Arts Center, envisions the studio becoming a vibrant hub for ceramic arts in the area, offering more advanced classes to studio members as well as public offerings for both adults and children.  To simplify enrollment, there is an online calendar where interested students can now sign up for classes:  http://nicodemuscenterforceramicstudies.fullslate.com

The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro continues to be open to the public every weekend through October 27 as one of the art galleries featured in Destination ARTS!  A wide variety of beautiful pottery is available for sale on Fridays 5 – 8 pm, Saturdays 11 am – 6 pm, and Sundays 12 – 4 pm.  For more information about the Center, classes, membership opportunities, and future plans, please email [email protected].

Destination ARTS! – 2nd GRAND OPENING – September 6, 7 & 8

Destination ARTS!   2nd Grand Opening Weekend

September 6, 7 & 8

NEW ART, NEW MUSIC, NEW CHILDREN’S EVENTS,
AND NOW — “LIVING ART

Read about Destination ARTS! in Recreation News – http://recreationnews.com/pdf/13/09/1/09-1-13/0610901131.pdf

Destination ARTS!, the 15 week long community effort to reshape a town through the arts, has reached the halfway point and is an unqualified success. The seven professionally curated art galleries in otherwise vacant downtown buildings along Waynesboro’s Main Street have breathed new life into our community in south central Pennsylvania.

There has been a constant flow of people downtown, both locals and visitors from Harrisburg, Lancaster, Washington, DC, and other areas, and art has been selling—to date, we have sold over $14,000 worth of art!

Friday, September 6 marks the “Second Opening” of the exhibits. Most of the art will be changed in all seven galleries and in eight storefront windows, and several exciting new “artistic adventures” are in the works for the weekend—Sept. 6, 7 and 8.

In all, there will be over 1,000 pieces of art on display and for sale within a two-block radius on Main Street.  More than 100 artists are represented. The exhibits feature paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, photography, and fiber arts, all of which make great gift ideas for early holiday shopping.

A new “Living Art” feature launches on Saturday from 1– 2 pm, when celebrated local actress and costume designer Kay Yaukey will become the “Portrait of Madame X” as painted by John Singer Sargent in 1884. Several local artists will be actively “painting the living painting.” This is the first of several Living Art features to be added to subsequent weeks at Destination ARTS!

Also new this weekend, children are invited to participate in the debut of a Destination ARTS! Scavenger Hunt! As “Destination ARTS! Detectives,” they will solve clues relating to the works of art on display. Prizes will be awarded upon completion of the “scavenger scroll,” which is available in all seven galleries. Successful detectives will be eligible to win one of several grand prizes to be drawn on Sunday, October 27. Free children’s programs will continue to be an important part of Destination ARTS!, with something new and different every week.

Music for the weekend will include traditional Irish folk musician Kevin James, “G@g” (duo of Gillian Hollen and Garrett Smith performing standards), classical pianist Daniel Lawson, and jazz standards from a trio comprised of Andrew Sussman (keyboard), Herm Hopple (bass), and Tom McFarland (vocals and guitar).

OPEN HOURS: Friday 5–8 pm, Saturday 11 am– 6 pm, and Sunday 12 pm– 4 pm

Renfrew’s Heritage Day – September 7

FROM FLY FISHING TO VICTORIAN JEWELRY TO KNIFE MAKING

RENFREW’S HERITAGE DAY  HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Renfrew Heritage Day Flyer

Learn to tie a fly the way it was done in the 18th century, watch a mastersmith produce a knife blade, and observe an on-site weaving of human or horse hair to add to Victorian-era jewelry.

All this and much more await visitors to Renfrew’s Heritage day,  now in its second year and growing, especially in the number and types of artisans. There will be more demonstrations, more original programming featuring objects made in the time period when the Museum House was built, and of   course, there will be music, hay rides, a petting zoo, and food.

Ken Reinard, fly fisherman extraordinaire, knows not only how to tie flies and use them but also the history of this art. “What it now considered the English tradition of fly tying started in Macedonia, around the 3rd century A.D.,” he noted.  He has also written a book on “The Colonial Angler’s Manual of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying.” He has been fly fishing  for over 50 years and taught others how to do so for some 30 years.  He became hooked (pardon the pun) from childhood, learning  from  his father who was a blacksmith at Landis Valley Museum.

Reinard will be displaying everything needed to fly fish, including flys, tackle, nets, and hook-making equipment, showing how these can be made from needles or nails. And he will be doing fly-tying demonstrations. “I usually like to do a period representation, portraying a wealthy individual who had time to go fishing.”

From flys to knives, Jay Hendrickson, Mastersmith with the American Bladesmith Society (ABS), will create a knife blade especially for Heritage Day. “I bring  a stump with the anvil on it and a little gas forge to heat up the metal,” he explained. “The work is all hand-done using no machinery.”

Hendrickson has been forging blades for  over 40 years.  “I like to hunt and for that you need a knife. I wanted to make my own. Then I met William (“Bill”) Moran, a master knifesmith, and became even more involved. Hendrickson is a former president and now Board member of the ABS and President of the Moran Foundation in Frederick.

Joining him will be other knifesmiths who will be available to respond to questions and are also ABS mastersmiths.  “Every couple of months we meet at the Moran shop and train those who are interested in this art and on October 12 there will be a show at the Moran Shop in Frederick, Md., “ he added. Some Moran knives will  also be available for purchase on Heritage Day.

Lucy Cadwallader practices an almost lost art –hair weaving.  Very popular during the Civil War and the Victorian era, it involved weaving the  hair of a loved one  into a piece of jewelry. Cadwallader notes that she “became interested in this through my experiences as a Civil War reenactor. “

This art form is considered a symbol of love as “it is very personal to have someone’s hair,” said Cadwallader. In fact, as she explains on her website, when Abraham Lincoln was courting Mary Todd he sent her some hair jewelry.

Today she often receives commissions from the public who send her hair to memorialize a personal loss, survival  from a serious illness, or even the passing of a favored pet.

At Heritage Day she will be demonstrating how to weave hair and will also have items from bracelets to brooches available for purchase.

Renfrew Jazz Festival – Sunday, August 25

RENFREW JAZZ FESTIVAL TO FEATURE LEGENDARY SAXOPHONIST-FLUTIST LEW TABACKIN ON AUGUST 25

Lew Tabackin

Lew Tabackin

The 22nd Annual Renfrew Jazz Festival will be held on Sunday, August 25, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on the lawn behind the Renfrew Museum, 1010 E. Main St., Waynesboro, PA. Admission is free.   In the event of rain, the concert will take place at Waynesboro Area Middle School auditorium.

This year’s concert will feature legendary saxophonist-flutist Lew Tabackin, accompanied by Paul Bollenback (guitar), Boris Koslov (bass), and Mark Taylor (drums).

Lew Tabackin, flutist and tenor saxophonist, is an artist of astonishing vision. His electrifying flute playing is virtuosic and passionate. His distinctive tenor sax style includes the use of wide intervals, abrupt changes of mood and tempo, and purposeful fervor, creating a distinctive melodic and rhythmic style which has made him one of the most highly respected jazz musicians in the world.

Tabackin’s  jazz credits are impressive.  Early on in his career, he played with Tal Farlow and Don Friedman and later in the big bands led by Cab Calloway, Les and Larry Elgart, Maynard Ferguson, Joe Henderson, Chuck Israels, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Clark Terry, and Duke Pearson. During the late 1960’s, Mr. Tabackin led his own trio and also played in groups with Donald Byrd, Roland Hanna, Elvin Jones, and Attila Zoller, as well as working with Doc Severinsen and the studio band for Dick Cavett’s television show.  In 1968 he met Toshiko Akiyoshi when the two played together in a quartet. They eventually married and moved to Los Angeles, where they formed the award-winning big band known as the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra. While in Los Angeles, Mr. Tabackin also played with Shelley Manne and with various trios of his own with Billy Higgins, John Heard, and Charlie Haden. He also toured Japan frequently.  During the 1980’s he began to get some long overdue recognition as a flutist, winning many Down Beat critic’s and reader’s polls. In 1982, he moved to New York. Since then he has solidified his position as a major tenor saxophone and flute artist, both in live concerts and on recordings.  He continues to tour the world as a soloist, playing clubs and jazz festivals with his own groups and as featured soloist with the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra. www.lewtabackin.com

Paul Bollenback (guitar) will be appearing at Renfrew for the 19th time in 22 years.  Each year that Bollenback returns, he is teamed with a totally different group, including a headliner and rhythm section.  Over the years, Bollenback has recorded seven albums as a leader including, “Invocation,” which features Randy Brecker and Chris McNulty and was honored in Downbeat magazine as one of the best CD’s of 2008.  In addition, Bollenback has been featured on countless other albums as a sideman, including 15 with organist Joey DeFrancesco, and has performed and/or recorded with Gary Bartz, Stanley Turrentine, Charlie Byrd, James Moody, Paul Bley, David “Fathead” Newman, Arturo Sandoval, Della Reese, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Ravi Coltrane, Joe Locke, Dave Valentin, Seve Wilson, Buster Williams, Jim Snidero, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and appeared at jazz festivals and clubs around the world.  In 1997, Bollenbeck was named Musician of the Year at the Washington Area Music Awards.    His range and impressive discography as both a sideman and a leader speak for themselves.  In 2011 Bollenback garnered a Grammy nomination for co-production on Joey DeFrancesco’s Never Say Goodbye (Hi Note).  www.paulbollenback.com

Two time Grammy award winning bassist Boris Koslov has been on the New York and International scene for the past 20 years.  Currently serving as bassist, arranger, and musical director for the Mingus Dynasty, he has performed over the years with many jazz greats including Michael Brecker, Ray Barretto, Lew Tabackin, Benny Golson, Michel Legrand, James Moody, John Blake, and many others.

Mark Taylor (drums) has been the drummer of choice for some of the most well known musicians in the history of jazz, including Benny Carter, George Coleman, Johnny Griffin, Joe Hdnerson, Lee Konitz, David “Fathead” Newman, Chet Baker, Randy Brecker, Clark Terry, Sonny Stitt, Frank Wess, Buddy Tate, Eddie Daniels, Al Grey, Monty Alexander, Kenny Barron, Hank Jones, Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, Mose Allison, Freddie Cole, Johnny Hartman, and scores of others.  He has performed on more than 60 albums, and has toured extensively around the world.

Parking for the free concert is available in Renfrew’s lower lot off Welty Road.  Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.  For more information call the Renfrew Institute at (717)-762-0373 or visit renfrewinstitute.org

Marjorie Tressler will be painting and demonstrating her craft throughout the day at the gallery located at 50 West Main St, gallery,  ”Small Town Hosts Big City Art”.

An initiative of the non-profit Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro (AAGW), Destination ARTS! is an ambitious attempt to revitalize a small town and stimulate economic development. Hundreds of volunteers are involved, working on everything from art selection and installation, building preparation, event programming, warehousing, and the coordination of “docents” to greet the public in each gallery during open hours. The event has united landlords, artists and arts organizations, businesses, local government and the general public in an effort to achieve a single goal — to bring vibrancy back to our downtown, and to share our enthusiasm for the natural beauty, history and talent of the area with others.

Some of the most highly respected fine artists in the Mid-Atlantic region are participating, including Benjamin Jones, David Buckley Good, Fritz Biggs, Brad Clever, Kevin Kutz and Steve Navada. There are also photographers such as Raymond Gehman, Janie Moltrup and Denny Bingaman, ceramic artists such as Hilda Eiber and Mike McIntyre, as well as many, many others. The exhibits feature paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, photography, and fiber arts. Gallery exhibits will change every six weeks.

The gallery locations and themes are:

  • 50 West Main St.  –  “Small Town Hosts Big City Art”  – Paintings by our most prominent and metropolitan artists
  • 37 West Main St.  – Furniture Market Showroom –  “Homegrown Art” – Art by professional or amateur artists who grew up in the Waynesboro area

Waynesboro is surrounded by beautiful countryside and parks, and there are many other activities and events to offer visitors. Renfrew Museum and Park and Renfrew Institute offer a wide variety of cultural events and environmental programs. There are great hiking opportunities along the Appalachian Trail, apple and peach orchards, excellent restaurants and award-winning chocolate shops. Pen Mar Park, once a tourist destination that drew as many as 20,000 visitors a day to the area, is still majestic and offers stunning views and dancing on Sundays. The Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro looks forward to sharing the natural beauty and talent of the area with all who attend Destination ARTS!
