About the New Show…

Gallery 50 presents 600x350.jpgThe new show, titled “Travel ~ Through the Artist’s Eye,” is highlighted by the work of South African painter, Eric Holsmann. Known throughout the world for his EricBolsmannillustrations of cityscapes in Pretoria, Holsmann has been honored by that city’s art museum with a retrospective exhibition spanning 25 years. Impressed by the photos his Pennsylvania-born wife took of Waynesboro, he was inspired to capture the charm of our Main Street’s buildings on canvas. These original oil paintings are at Gallery 50 for viewing and sale beginning February 28.

paper cutting known as Scherenschnitte.
He will have supplies available to help visitors create their own Valentine.

Reverend Hammann grew up in Boiling Springs, PA and graduated from Shippensburg University and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He served 24 years as a US Army Chaplain. Rev. Hammann recently retired as the pastor of Hawley Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blue Ridge Summit, where he resides with his wife, Lucy. He learned how to create scissor cuts through books at the Ephrata cloister, and uses an X-Acto knife, which allows extremely intricate cuts.

As a member of the Guild of American Papercutters, Rev. Hammann continues a tradition from the 16th century, when women used scissors and men used knives to create intricate artwork. German and Swiss immigrants decorated their homes and created wedding and baptismal certificates using the cuttings. Liebes Briefen (love letters) created this way eventually melded with the English Valentine. Silhouette portraits were another popular form of Scherenschnitte before the camera was invented.

Destination ARTS! – Waynesboro, PA

Destination ARTS! was conceived in May 2013 as a community revitalization project based on the arts, with the ultimate goal of turning Waynesboro, PA, into an arts destination.  The initial project took seven large, vacant commercial buildings on Main Street and converted them into curated art galleries, while also filling an additional eight storefront windows with art.  The project was successfully launched on July 19, 2013 and ended 15 weeks later on October 27, having displayed over 1,600 pieces of art from more than 120 artists, including local artists and some of the most highly respected artists in the Mid-Atlantic states.  Sales exceeded $25,000.  Entirely organized by volunteers, the project brought together artists, community members, and businesses, with over 200 volunteers participating.   All but one of the seven galleries are now rented.

After our successful 15 week programs, we closed for one week and then reopened.  Currently, four galleries continue to operate downtown.  Open four days per week, the galleries have live music every Friday night, artist demonstrations and events every Saturday afternoon, and other special events (when available) on Thursdays and Sundays.  Check the schedule below for information and the AAGW website for more details.  As we approach spring and summer 2014, more activities and new arts projects will be added.  Our hope is that this will lead to an increase in vibrancy and a permanent transformation of our community into an arts and culture destination.

Please join us to celebrate Destination ARTS!
