Destination ARTS! ended in its current form on October 27, but Waynesboro, PA  is continuing to move forward towards its goal of becoming  an arts destination and an arts community.  One of the first major steps will begin on November 8, when a new arts co-op will open at 42 West Main Street.

“We are very excited to introduce this unique gallery,” notes Donna Bingaman, who along with her husband Denny volunteered to spearhead the formation of the co-op.  “It will be filled with music from co-op members, new shows monthly from the Cumberland Valley Craftmens Guild, fine art artist of the month shows, art classes, weaving loom demo’s, and artisans teaching and demonstrating their fine art and crafts.”

The co-op will feature oil paintings, watercolors, fine art photographs, wind chimes, musical instruments, fine craft furniture, blown glass, pottery, tile wall hangings, weavings, bronze sculpture, wood carvings, and more.

The grand opening reception for artists and public will be Friday, November 8 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.  The co-op members invite you to come visit the new gallery and meet the artists.  Music will be provided by the eclectic “Earthsong Ensemble” and refreshments will be served.

Trinity Players to present “Freud’s Last Session” Nov. 7 – 10

Trinity Players Presents:  “FREUD’S LAST SESSION”

WHEN:  Thursday and Friday, Nov. 7 and 8 at 7:30 PM.  Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9 and 10 at 2:30 PM

WHERE:  Trinity United Church of Christ Harbaugh Hall

WHO:  H. Clayton Moyer as Sigmund Freud and Donovan L. Yaukey as C.S. Lewis

“Freud’s Last Session” centers on legendary psychoanalyst Freud, dying a painful death from oral cancer, and on rising academic star C.S. Lewis.

Invited to Freud’s London study as World War II is erupting, Lewis expects to be called on the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book.  He soon realizes he has been invited to participate in a much more significant agenda as they clash passionately on love, sex, the meaning of life, and extensively on the existence of God. Not just a powerful debate, this is a profound and deeply touching play about two men who boldly addressed the greatest questions of all time.

“Freud’s Last Session,” a 75-minute gem of a play based on Dr. Armand Nicholi’s book  “The Question of God,” is an exciting battle of wits and an intellectually thrilling theatre experience.

Tickets will be available at the door for $7.00 and in advance (details yet to be announced).  Everyone, teenage and older, is encouraged to attend. Email[email protected] for more info or to inquire about advanced purchases.

Destination ARTS! Schedule of Events Finale – October 25 – 27

The final weekend of the 15 week initiative Destination ARTS! will be October 25 – 27, and it promises to be a weekend to remember!  This will be the last chance to view all seven art galleries and seven storefront windows before they are dismantled on October 28.  The weekend’s entertainment will feature bluegrass and classic country from Brad Munn, folk from “Mountain Air”, jazz from Billie Holiday Award winner Kerensa Gray, classical from pianist Daniel Lawson, our first ever dance demonstration from A&B Dance Dimensions students, jazz from clarinetist Patrick McNamee, classical from cellist Ruth Showalter, and the student group “The Kat Carlson Band”.

In addition, there will be “Living Art,” where local artists will paint Kay Yaukey portraying John Philip Sargent’s painting of “Madame X,” as well as painting demonstrations by Marjorie Tressler and Donna Bingaman.

“Destination ARTS! Detectives” will have a final chance to participate in our children’s Scavenger Hunt.  Grand prize winners will be drawn on October 27 at 2 pm!

Destination ARTS! currently features over 1,000 pieces of art for sale in seven art galleries and seven storefront windows within a two-block radius on Main Street in Waynesboro.  The galleries feature paintings, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, photography, and fiber arts.

“By any standards, Destination ARTS! has been a great success,” notes event chair Andrew Sussman.  “Over the past 15 weeks we have sold more than $20,000 worth of art, been visited by people from 25 states and eight countries, and exhibited over 1,600 pieces of art from over 120 artists and artisans.  Several buildings have been rented on Main Street, and several new exciting arts related ventures are starting and will be announced next week!”

An initiative of the non-profit Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro, Destination ARTS! was conceived as an attempt to revitalize a small town and stimulate economic development.  In a short six week period, seven vacant buildings were simultaneously converted into full-fledged, curated art galleries, along with eight storefront displays, filled with art from some of the most highly respected artists in the Mid-Atlantic States.  During the event the streets have also been filled with a wide variety of live music, children’s activities, art demonstrations, a magician, a drum circle, “living art”, book readings, dance, and other activities.  The event has united landlords, artists and arts organizations, businesses, and the general public in a single goal – to bring vibrancy back to Main Street, and to share enthusiasm for the natural beauty, history, and talent of the area with others.

Destination ARTS! is open Friday 5–8 pm, Saturday 11 am– 6 pm, and Sunday 12 pm– 4 pm. All activities are open to the public and free of charge. More information is available at www.artsalliancegw.org or by emailing [email protected].

Focus on Destination ARTS! Artists – David Buckley Good and Brad Clever

WAYNESBORO, PA, SHOWS WORLDCLASS ART IN 7 GALLERIES AT DESTINATION ARTS!

Art is on display and available for purchase weekends through October 27.  Art makes a great holiday gift!
David Buckley Good and Brad Clever’s work is being shown at the gallery at 50 West Main Street.

By Allison Schuchart

Painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso is quoted as saying “the purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”

In downtown Waynesboro, the works of nationally-acclaimed artists are on display as part of Destination ARTS! and have been drawing visitors weekly from Harrisburg to the Washington, D.C., metro region to do to just that.   More than 1,000 pieces of art are on display and for sale, representing over 100 artists.  To date, sales have totaled over $20,000.  The show in its current form will end on October 27.

One of the esteemed artists showcased is Baltimore, Md., resident David Buckley Good, whose work has graced the cover of American Artist Magazine and been featured in a number of well-known, highly-respected American galleries.

Good began his artistic path as a surrealist painter before gradually moving into the realm of traditional realism. The subjects of his works range from European and American architectural landscapes to still life and the figure.

“David Buckley Good is a master landscape painter of the finest quality,” said Marjorie Tressler, Lead Curator of Destination ARTS! “His still life paintings are full of wonderful juicy, liquid-looking color; his brushstrokes very thoughtfully applied using his great technical ability. His paintings look finished and beautiful from the very first brush stroke, an ability very few artists have. Studying with him was one of the most important influences of my later painting career.”

Good’s work is represented in public and private collections in the United States and Europe. In 2001, he was invited by Les Amis de la Grande Vigne to paint the medieval city of Dinan, France, during a one-month stay as the city’s artist in residence. His time in Dinan was featured in American Artist Magazine. In addition to creating his own work as an artist, Good teaches painting and drawing at Schuler School of Fine Art and the Mitchell School of Fine Arts.

A native of Ohio, Good graduated in 1975 from Bowling Green University and in 1998 from the Schuler School of Fine Arts. In 1977, he received a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation to study at the Art Students League of New York.

Also of note is Chambersburg resident Brad Clever, who is best known for his paintings centered on the theme of wine.

Brad Clever

Clever has been painting still life themes for over 25 years and gained national recognition in galleries spanning the country. From the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown, Md., to galleries and exhibitions in New York City, Washington, D.C., South Carolina, Florida, California, Illinois and Ohio, Clever’s work has touched diverse populations since the early 1980s.

He has won several awards for his work, including the 2013 Best of Show at the Cumberland Valley Artists Exhibition at Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. In addition, Clever’s work has been featured in American Artist magazine and The Artists Magazine.

“Brad Clever is one of the finest artists I have known. His still life paintings are beautiful, consistent in quality, with strong compositions, precision in detail and use of color. I never tire of viewing his paintings and always find one detail I did not see before,” Tressler explained.

Clever received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Virginia Commonwealth University, majoring in communication arts and graphic design. Prior to retiring in 2001 from The Beistle Company, a maker of seasonal paper decorations in Shippensburg, Pa., he was the company’s art director for 32 years.

Destinatn ARTS! is a curated art show that runs through the end of October from 5 to 8 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. In addition to the art displayed, the event also features live music performances, art demonstrations, children’s programs, a scavenger hunt, and living art. Focus on Destination ARTS! Artists – Charles Brown

Destination ARTS! brings more than 1,000 pieces of art to Waynesboro, PA

By David Thompson

Once known chiefly for the production of machine tools, the south-central Pennsylvania borough of Waynesboro would seem an unlikely place for a vibrant art scene.

But thanks to an inspired volunteer effort led by a local arts alliance, Waynesboro is in the midst of Destination ARTS!, a 15-week project that has turned empty downtown storefronts into professionally curated art galleries.

A “second opening” of the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro’s Destination ARTS! was held Sept. 6-8 as the project reached its halfway point. Many of the art exhibits, which include paintings, sculptures, jewelry, ceramics, photography and fiber arts, were changed in seven galleries and eight storefront windows.

More than 1,000 pieces of art, produced by more than 100 artists, are on display and for sale. To date, sales have now totaled more than $20,000, with visitors coming to Waynesboro from 25 states and 13 countries.

artist Charles Brown

artist Charles Brown

Like Waynesboro, exhibiting artist Charles Brown of Chambersburg, Pa., has a background not normally associated with fine arts.

Trained in mechanical engineering, Brown worked for Aerojet General in California. Projects included rocket engineering and high-energy chemical lasers.

But Brown, a native of Hagerstown, Md., just to the south of Waynesboro, had long been interested in art.

“I took a course at the Washington County (Md.) School of Art when I was young. I think I was somewhere around 12 to 14 at the time,” he said.

Brown, 83, confined his art to drawing until 1968, when he decided to take up painting. He started with watercolors.

After retiring in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1994, Brown moved to Chambersburg to pursue art full-time. There he got together with local artists such as Becky Dietrich, well-known as the former owner of A Little Gallery in Mont Alto.

“I’ve known Becky Dietrich for a long time, and we’ve painted together,” Brown said.

His local memberships include the Franklin County Art Alliance of Chambersburg, The Valley Art Association of Hagerstown and the Studio Club of Waynesboro. He has been associated in the Members Gallery of the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo and is a signature member of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society.

In recent years, Brown has expanded his painting horizons to include more acrylic works.  Located in an area that’s the home to several Civil War battlefields, he’s also turned to the conflict as a subject for his art.

“I went to re-enactments in the area, started talking to people and taking photos,” he said. “I got interested and decided to do more Civil War painting.”

Brown said Civil War paintings can be difficult to sell because so many talented artists have done them. He mentioned Mort Kuntsler as one artist whom he admired for his work on historical subjects.

“I actually stood in line at one of his book signings and had him sign the book for me,” Brown said. “He must have talked with me for about 10 minutes. I was flattered.”

Brown’s Civil War works on display in Waynesboro include “Confederate Calvary” and “Battle at Cedar Creed,” both acrylics, and watercolors “Rebs in Pursuit” and “Diversions in a Reb Camp.” Other watercolors include “Nawlins Jazz,” “Sorting the Catch,” “Burkholder and Chickens,” and “New Orleans.”

Marjorie Tressler, lead curator for Destination ARTS!, said the quick transformation of Waynesboro into an arts center has been difficult, but satisfying.

“All in all, it’s been a good experience,” she said. “Artists have been very supportive. People have taken a real chance here to exhibit in temporary galleries. We’ve been able to get top-notch artists to commit enough works for galleries in several stores.”

Tressler, herself an established artist, has used her connections to help bring works from local and regional artists into the show. Her studies at the Schuler School for the Fine Arts in Baltimore brought her in contact with the husband-wife art team of Hans Guerin and Beth de Loiselle. Both are graduates of the Schuler School, which was founded by Hans’ maternal grandparents, Hans and Ann Didusch Schuler, and his mother, Francesca Schuler Guerin, is the present director.

Guerin and de Loiselle are exhibiting a variety of oil and scratchboard works in Waynesboro.

Destination ARTS! is scheduled to end Oct. 27, but some aspects of Waynesboro’s recent cultural resurgence will definitely continue beyond that date.

The Ceramic Arts Center of Waynesboro is being established in the Grove Building at 13 S. Church St., just off Waynesboro’s square. The building has served as a gallery for ceramic pieces by local artists during the festival and will continue to function as a center for pottery classes and ceramic production after Destination ARTS! ends.

Mary Ashe-Mahr teaching ceramics class

Mary Ashe-Mahr teaching ceramics class

Mary Ashe-Mahr, an Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro board member who is  instructing classes at the center, said one objective of the center is to encourage area residents to buy local goods made by local artists.

“It will be awesome to have a permanent art fixture in downtown,” she said. “We’re looking forward to making this a vital location.”

Guild members of the center will have 24-hour, seven days a week access to the facility, which will include six potters wheel, two kilns, a ceramics library, and pottery for sale.

Ashe-Mahr said about $49,000 had been raised toward a goal of $77,000 for the center’s preliminary budget. The funding will help purchase a gas kiln, ventilation, potters wheels, cabinets, tables and many other items.

The center’s first program, “Coaster and Pendant Making Workshop for Kids,” taught by Nickole Bricker, was offered Sept. 28. The first adult class, “Introduction to Ceramics Studio,” was taught by Ashe-Mahr in early October.  New classes for both adults and children will be starting November 3 and December 1.  Children’s classes will be offered on November 23 and December 14.  For more information email [email protected].

·         1 pm  – Lynda Beckwith – ETCHING DEMONSTRATION – 2 East Main St
Mercersburg resident Lynda Beckwith first became interested in etching when she took a class in 1981 to just try it out. Between  moving around a good bit and working full time she didn’t have a lot of time to pursue printmaking  for several years but continued to draw and  paint. She enjoyed printmaking so much that in 1994 she began working with dry point on Plexiglas plates using an old washer ringer for a press, which achieved reasonable results. When she began working with the Penn’s Woods Printmakers in 2004 she was able to hone her skills and learn new techniques under the guidance of Penn’s Woods mentor, Sue Frotscher, and from her fellow Penn’s Woods printmakers.
