Destination ARTS! Seeks Volunteers in Waynesboro, PA!

Volunteers (3)

Would you like to help revitalize downtown Waynesboro and transform it into an arts destination?

Destination ARTS!, an initiative of the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro (AAGW), started its third year of activity on July 10, 2015.  There are more artists, live music, literary arts, art demonstrations, workshops, and classes than ever.  Five art venues are open four days a week,  year round.  We have an Art Scavenger Hunt for children, magic shows, Wine Down Fridays, and special events such as our 2nd Annual Gallery Wine Walk scheduled for September 12.  We have collaborated with WASHS Art Department, Penn State Mont Alto, Quincy Village, the Cumberland Valley School of Music, and the Waynesboro Area Council of Churches.  Where other communities offer a “First Friday” once a month, Waynesboro presents free live music multiple times every single weekend, all year long.

Volunteers are needed to help in the galleries during open hours, assist with hospitality (receptions), greet and setup for musicians, as well as to lend a hand with marketing, proofreading, graphic design, and other areas which will utilize your special experience and skills. This is a grassroots community effort, and we need YOU to get involved to make it continue to succeed!

Conceived in July 2013, Destination ARTS! has been called “the best thing to happen to Waynesboro in 30 years”.  We have been lauded throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, including recognition from two Pennsylvania Governors and the PA Council on the Arts as an innovative initiative using the arts to revitalize our community.  Recently, the PA Downtown Center presented us with a coveted “Townie Award” as one of the most noteworthy revitalization projects in the state!

Since its inception, there have been ongoing arts activities in Waynesboro every weekend.  Currently there are five art galleries downtown.  All Destination ARTS! activities are organized and coordinated entirely by volunteers.

This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference, to have an impact on the future of our community, and to share in this exciting adventure.  Most important, it is FUN!

Please join us!  If you are interested in getting involved in this grassroots community effort, please contact us at [email protected].

About the Artists

Ben McAfee400 Ben McAfee was born in Waynesboro and graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School in 2003. He received his bachelor’s degree in Art History from Penn State University in 2007 before receiving his Master of Fine Art in Figurative Drawing and Painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Much of McAfee’s work focuses on portraiture and figure paintings, exploring emotional and physical responses. He strives to capture extreme emotions through the imagery in the work and his painting technique. Ben calls his approach “emotional realism.” He now lives and works in Chambersburg and is on the art faculty of Hagerstown Community College.

Joan Bontempo Artwork400Joan Bontempo has been a ceramic artist for more than 25 years, creating traditional functional works and expressive abstract sculpture in clay and mixed media. The ceramic methods she uses are high fire stoneware and low-temperature Raku firing and may include bits of glass, copper or gold enhancements.

Bontempo’s work has been shown in galleries, museums and universities regionally and nationally since 1977. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Art at the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Fine Art from Wayne State University. Bontempo is an associate professor of Art Appreciation/Art History & Studio Art at Hagerstown Community College. She lives in Shepherdstown, WV.

Andrew Gehman400Andrew Gehman was born in Virginia Beach, VA but moved to Waynesboro at an early age. He graduated from WASHS in 2003. Pursuing a love of photography and filmmaking, Andrew graduated from Penn State University in 2007 with a degree in Film/Video. The seed for creating art with paint was planted while watching his brother, Mike Gehman, a gifted painter. Attracted to graffiti art, he decided to pick up a few cans of spray paint. Something clicked, and he’s been painting ever since.

Andrew lives in Waynesboro, where he makes a living as a freelance videographer/video editor and photographer, while continuing to explore all creative media.
