Thursday, August 6

Marjorie TresslerMarjorie Tressler, Gallery 50 curator/director, is starting a new demo series this Thursday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, painting a landscape in oil.  Marjorie studied eight years with master landscape artist David Buckley Good at the Schuler School of Fine Arts, as well as with Ron Riddick of Tucson AZ, Denise Burns of Catalina Island, CA, and Lester Jay Stone locally.

donna-bingamanDonna Bingaman will be demonstrating  portraits and floral oil painting from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, Thursday at 42 West Arts Co-Op.  Donna is a native of Waynesboro, PA.  She specializes in painting oil portraits, still life, genre and sculptures.  A graduate of the Washington School of Art, she has studied with several regionally and nationally known portrait and oil painting artists.

will be demonstrating Wood Burning Techniques at 42 West Arts Co-Op from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Thursday.  Beard has been an educator/artist and woodworker for 50 years. A graduate of St Johns College and University of Florida, he is a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen – Cumberland Valley Chapter, the Lincoln Highway Heritage group and the Woodsmith’s advisory board.

DonnaMitchelRebuildingBosnianKatrinaHoopesSmilyFaceSelf PortraitIn addition to more than 800 pieces of art from some of the finest artists in the Mid-Atlantic states, Gallery 50 is currently featuring artists Katrina Hoopes and Donna Mitchell in a show called “2 Women, 2 Points of View”. Katrina Hoopes, an impressionist oil painter, uses bold strokes in both large and small formats.  Donna Mitchell, a traditional realist, works in pastel using brilliant colors and interesting subjects in her compositions.

CameronMolloyCameron Malloy and Dale Sharrah will make their debut performance in Center Square, 5:30 – 8:00 pm (This is a last minute change from previous posts.) Cameron Malloy’s latest CD, “The Drivin’ Wheel”, features Americana with a mix of country, blues and folk. The single “Just One Tender Kiss” is into its 19th week of world wide release on Indie radio stations, where it is estimated it has received almost 100,000 plays worldwide. On NumberOneMusic charts, 3 songs from the CD are charting on country rock charts, #1 in PA “Talkin Louisianne”, Blues Charts for PA #1 “Big Muddy River”, folk charts , #43 “Bird With a Broken Wing”.

Patric Schlee will be creating original improvisational music on guitar, didgeridoo, flute and drums at 42 West ARTS Co-Op.  The public is invited to join in.

Deftly using color, light and movement their paintings draw us in capturing the atmosphere of an evanescent moment in time.

Cats - 42 West ARts Co-op42 West Arts Co-Op currently is highlighting a show titled “Cats” which will continue through August. Various art forms including work by Donna Bingaman (paintings), Denny Bingaman (photography and cold cast bronzes), Jenifer Codwell (jewelry), Laura Shindle (paintings), Ed Beard (wood burnings), Andy Smetzer (photography), Pat Beard (fiber art),  and other artists work from the Co-Op is well represented.

  hosts pottery classes and workshops including an introduction to Pottery Class, a Teen Wheel Throwing Class, a monthly Children’s Class, and two hour Corks and Clay Workshops specializing in creating hand built projects.  The Ceramic Arts Center brings together area potters of all skill levels and ages with classes, pottery sales, and members have 24/7 access to the wheels and kiln.

Saturday, August 8

Patrick McNamee (2)A group of musical alumni and faculty from Waynesboro Area Schoold District will provide a special performance from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm in Center Square.  Featuring Ben Dennis (vocals), Leann Helfrick (clarinet), Lexie Shank (saxophone), Natalie Smith (flute), Brenda Slick (piano), and Pat McNamee (saxophone and clarinet).

Pat Beard
will demonstrate Spinning Alpaca Yarn Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at 42 West Arts Co-Op.  She began knitting at age 10 and has loved working with yarn and fabrics ever since. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Univ. of Florida and is a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and the Cumberland Valley Craft Guild.  By combining interesting colors with textures and a touch of shiny yarn, Pat weaves fabric on old-fashioned looms. Although a number of pieces are woven from the same warp threads, each piece is different. After the weaving, each panel is washed before sewing on old industrial machines. Traditional scarves and shawls are carefully hand finished. Pat does all her own weaving and sewing.

The Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery will host a reception at 1:00 pm on Saturday for photographer Amanda F. Wells, whose work will be on display.  The school also offers after-school art classes for school age students.

Tristate Jitterbugs (2)
Saturday from 5:00 – 6:00 pm, entertainment will be provided by the Tri-State Jitterbugs. The group of retro swing-dancers will show off their fancy footwork on Center Square.

AcrossThePondThe popular Irish music of Across the Pond will be featured in Center Square from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.  “The most booked Celtic band in Central PA” features Michael Morrison (guitar, mandolin, flute, and vocals), Chuck Krepley (fiddle, guitar, and vocals), and Dan Diviney (whistles, bodhran, and vocals).  All members of the trio are passionate about their traditional roots but say their music is also delivered with a modern edge, with a repertoire ranging from hauntingly slow aires to high energy jigs and reels, love ballads and contemporary songs.

Musical performances are supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Patrick McNamee and Andrew Sussman

Patrick McNamee (saxophone) and Andrew Sussman (piano) will play jazz standards from 2;00 pm to 4:00 pm in Gallery 50.

David Wayne and Miss PenelopeMagician David WayneA Magical Experience, featuring the Magic of David Wayne and Balloons by Miss Penelope will perform from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm in Center Square (rain site Gallery 20 East).  Miss Penelope will create balloon animals at the start of the hour.  The magic show will begin at 3:30 pm, with balloon art being offered for the first half hour.   David Wayne Bowers has been performing Magic since 1996.  He is a member of The Society of American Magicians and currently serves as National President Elect.  He will be installed as the National President in the summer of 2015 at the S.A.M Annual Convention in Philadelphia, PA.  He is also a member of The International Brotherhood of Magicians, and The Magicians Alliance of Eastern States.  He has performed in various “King Magic Ring” presentations including “The Festival of Magic” at the Maryland Theater and several West Virginia Wizards shows at the Apollo Theater in Martinsburg, WV.  Mr. Bowers has also appeared at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. for their Children’s Day festival.  He has presented shows for the Totem Pole Theater and local clubs and organizations, and enjoys performing for children of all ages.  .“Miss Penelope” (Judy Bowers) is a retired WASD teacher with 35 years of experience working with children. In addition to assisting with the magic show, “Miss Penelope” will be creating balloon animals for the children.

Denny Bingaman - Gourd Art
At 42 West Arts Co-Op, Denny Bingaman will be demonstrating the technique of carving and dyeing a dragonfly on a gourd bowl on Saturday August 1 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.  Denny is a native of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, who photographs birds and wildlife in the local area as well as other parts of the country. He started into photographing wildlife about 30 years ago, and has filed some 65,000 images of birds and other wildlife.

The Wayne Band (3)

The Wayne Band will perform concert band music on Center Square at 2:00 pm.  Organized in 1899, the Wayne Band is one of the oldest community bands in Pennsylvania and is currently directed by Daniel Deatrich.

Ethan Larsh

Ethan Larsh will be performing in Center Square (rain site Gallery 20 East) from 5:30 – 8:00 pm.  Larsh is a singer/songwriter from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Being influenced by Harry Nilsson and Paul McCartney, he delivers catchy piano rock that will have you singing along.

Lowdown Grasskickers2The Lowdown Grasskickers will perform in Center Square (rain site Gallery 20 East) from 3:00 – 6:00 pm.  Formed as an off-shoot of The Boro Boogie Pickers in 2013, this bluegrass band features Jon Ingels (mandolin, guitar, dobro), Brad Munn (guitar and fiddle), Kevin Coldsmith (bass), and Rob Kullman (banjo). In addition to bluegrass, the band also crosses into country, rock, folk and blues music, with extended jams and improvisation when the mood strikes.

At 42 West Arts Co-Op, Donna Bingaman will be demonstrating oil painting portraits of people and pets from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.  Donna specializes in oil and pastel portraits.  She is an impressionist, realist, and a blender of originality and tradition, and her work has won numerous awards.

Patric Schlee didgeridoo
Also at 42 West Arts Co-Op, Patric Schlee will demonstrate how to play the didgeridoo from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.  The didgeridoo  is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia around 1,500 years ago and still in widespread use today both in Australia and around the world.  It is sometimes described as a natural woodentrumpet or ”drone pipe”.

(vocals, fiddle, and guitar) will perform acoustic tunes, 2-4 p.m., Center Square (rain site Gallery 20 East).  In addition to their work as a duo, Scott and Laurie are well known throughout the area for their work with Soleil.  Scott also performs with the popular bluegrass group Mountain Ride.

Sharon Rost (2)A special Opening Reception will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 pm to mark the occasion.  The four artists, who are from the Frederick, MD and Washington, DC area, share their contemporary and intimate interpretation of the classic landscape painting. Kerensa Gray and Beth TrezOne of the area’s most popular performers, Kerensa Gray, will be featured at Center Square (rain site Gallery 50) from 5:30 – 8:00 pm.  Winner of the 20th Annual Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, Gray is often compared to jazz icons such as Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Krall.  She will be accompanied by pianist Beth Trez.

Willy's Duo (1)“The Willys Duo”Bill Serfass (vocals and guitars) and Neil Ecker (vocals and percussion instruments), will be making their Destination ARTS! debut in Center Square (rain site Gallery 20 East) from 2:30 – 5:30 pm. This popular group from Gettysburg features a repertoire which includes a wide variety of acoustic rock, from the Beatles to Wilco, as well as original songs in a similar style. They have been performing together since 1992.

Andy Smetzer300Andy Smetzer will be demonstrating his techniques for creating Digital Art from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in 42 West Arts Co-Op.  He will explain how he keeps a large library of photographs of random objects such as rocks, tree stumps, and clouds, and then uses these images on future projects to form a new creation.

Ken Jankura (vocals and upright bass), Joe Dennison (guitar), and Bob Jones (drums) will play jazz standards in Center Square (rain site Gallery 20 East) from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Sharon RostThe 2015 edition of the Destination ARTS! will officially start on Friday, July 10, at 5:00 pm with the 3rd  Annual Grand Opening Reception, featuring  wine and light refreshments in Gallery 50, 50 West Main St., Waynesboro, PA.  Gallery 50 was the first gallery to open in 2013, and it continues to be curated by Destination ARTS! lead curator, Marjorie Tressler and operated by the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro.  It features exceptional paintings, photography, etchings, jewelry, and more, from some of the most highly respected artists from around the country.  Artists Katrina Hoopes and Donna Mitchell have a special show at the moment called “2 Women, 2 Points of View”.  The artists have very different styles and applications for their work for a very interesting contrast for this show.  Katrina Hoopes, an impressionist oil painter, uses bold strokes in both large and small formats.  Donna Mitchell, a traditional realist, works in pastel using brilliant colors and interesting subjects in her compositions.  Both women are accomplished in their own mediums, and they will be present to meet the public on July 10.  Music for the reception will be provided by pianist Sharon Rost.

Destination ARTS! to mark the start of its 3rd year with a Special Opening Weekend Celebration July 9 – 12

This weekend, Destination ARTS! will celebrate the start of its third year in Waynesboro.  Since its inception in July 2013, Destination ARTS! has been lauded throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, and earlier this month, the PA Downtown Center presented Destination ARTS! with a coveted “Townie Award” as one of the most noteworthy revitalization projects in the state of Pennsylvania.

High quality, curated art remains the standard at Destination ARTS! five venues, along with live music, art demonstrations, and special events – all offered free to the public.  Where other communities offer a “First Friday” once a month, Waynesboro presents free live music every single weekend, all year long.  During this summer expansion, which will run through October 4, Destination ARTS! will again offer live music every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, as well as children’s activities such as our Art Scavenger Hunt, free workshops, and magic shows.  Local authors are spotlighted with book signings and publication parties, and there are ongoing writers and songwriters forums and community-building collaborations with schools, colleges, senior centers, and churches.  Special events being scheduled for this summer include the Second Annual Gallery Wine Walk, set for September 12, and a new Destination INNOVATION project to be unveiled soon.

will continue her portrait demonstrations from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in Gallery 50.  Marjorie is curator of Gallery 50, and a highly respected portrait artist and teacher.  She has had several solo shows at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, the Schuler School of Fine Arts, and other locations.

Donna Mitchell comes from a more traditional classic art educational background having studied extensively with renowned portrait artist Karl Foster.  Donna is a member / instructor at The Art Center School and Galleries in Mechanicsburg, PA.  Donna is also a member of the Portrait Society of America and several other art institutions.  She has exhibited both solo and juried shows at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts as well as in Alabama, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Negley Bros
The Negley Brothers will be the featured musicians in Center Square from 5:30 – 8:00 pm.  This popular duo who perform classic rock and new music, focused on vocal harmony, which will get the audience up and dancing.  (Rain site will be Gallery 20 East.)

42WestARTSWAt 42 West Arts Co-Op , 5:00 – 8:00 pm, a special live performance and recording will be taking place featuring Susan Dale on keyboard, Patric Schlee on drums and flute, and Tom McFarland on guitar.

The artists at 42 West Arts Co-Op currently has an all members show titled “Cats” continuing through August. The show has “Cats” in various art forms including Donna Bingaman paintings, Denny Bingaman photography and cold cast bronzes, Jenifer Codwell jewelry, Laura Shindle paintings, Ed Beard wood burnings, Andy Smetzer photography, Pat Beard fiber art and other artists work from the Co-Op.

This is the final weekend to view “Vivid Abstractions” – Paintings and Mixed Media featuring the work of Linda Slattery Sherman and Marion Griffin.  The show, which is in Gallery 20 East and has a number of vibrant painting and a variety of sizes, will end on July 12.

In addition to “Vivid Abstractions” Gallery 20 East is featuring the work of several local photographers.

OutoftheBasementTourJohn O. Williams will present a special art exhibit called “Out of the Basement” from 8:00 – 10:00 pm at The Contemporary School of the Arts & Gallery. This should be an exciting show as the art is animated and emanates sound and light.

The 10th Annual Cumberland Valley Pottery Festival
will be held on Saturday, July 11th from 12:00-6:00 pm in the Susquehanna Bank parking lot and at the Ceramic Arts Center.  During the festival, several regional ceramic artists, including Mike McIntyre of Fire Robin Pottery, Pam Hall of Twin Moons Pottery,  Annamarie Poole of Blue Mist Pottery,  Denise Joyal of Kilnjoy Ceramics, Karen Arrington of Soulful Pottery, Linda Tweit of Mountain View Pottery and several members of the NCCS  pottery guild will display and sell their works. Visitors will have an opportunity to interact with the artisans and explore the wide range of clay working techniques they use. Other activities and classes will also be offered.

RichFehle
Singer-songwriter Rich Fehle will perform in Center Square (rain site Gallery 20 East), 3:00 – 6:00 pm.  Through songwriting Rich has performed at country music festivals in Portugal, in venues throughout Northern England. His songs have been used in projects in the UK, and recently a production company creating shows for CMT.

will be demonstrating the technique of carving and dyeing a dragonfly on a gourd bowl from 12:00 to 2:00 pm at 42 West Arts Co-Op.  Denny is a native of Waynesboro who is well know for his photographs of birds and wildlife.  He also works with clay, making sculptures of wildlife using his photographs as a reference.

donna-bingamanAlso at 42 West Arts Co-Op, Donna Bingaman will be demonstrating oil painting portraits of people and pets from 12:00 to 2:00 pm.  Donna specializes in oil and pastel portraits.  She is an impressionist, realist, and a blender of originality and tradition, and her work has won numerous awards.

Nicola Sussman (headshot)“Rhythm and Art with Nicola Sussman” will be offered free of charge from 2:00 to 3:00 pm in Gallery 20 EastChildren entering grades K – 3 are invited to come and create an oatmeal box drum and then learn rhythm techniques as they sing to a variety of age appropriate songs. A teacher in Gathersburg, MD,  Nicola Sussman holds a BS in Elementary/Special Education from Hood College and also teaches for Cumberland Valley School of Music and is a licensed “Zumba for Kids” instructor.

She is a certified fitness instructor and a health and fitness ministry leader.

Jason KablerJason Kabler will be featured in Center Square (rain site Gallery 20 East) from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.  Jason  is a singer, songwriter, and Nashville recording artist originally from Greencastle PA.  In 1999, Jason signed a record deal with an independent record label, and released his debut album, “Follow Your Heart.”  Still living in Nashville, Jason has produced six more CD’s and is now the head of the Hendersonville, Tennessee chapter of Global Songwriters Connection. GSC is an organization that helps songwriters become more successful through education, support and networking. Jason is currently writing songs for his ninth album which he hopes to have recorded for release in 2016. He also continues to tour.

 

Musical performances are supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

– Friday, July 3, 5:30 – 8 p.m. at Gallery 50, Nick Andrew Staver (vocals & guitar) is bringing a new voice to the blues. Assigned with the gritty personalities of a blue collar worker to the seducing baritone of a lovers quarrel and reconciliation, each song defines its own character inside the autobiographical music. Add in sharp improv skills and award winning songwriting and his music lays the blues on the line and never hesitates to go beyond its borders.  The gallery is located at 50 West Main Street.

Patric Schlee will play flute, drums and guitar at the 42 West Artists Co-Op on Friday from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. A native of Baltimore, Schlee lived on remote West Virginia mountain land until he moved to South Mountain 25 years ago.  He has spent many years fine-tuning his wind chime, flute and chime harp designs. To quote Patric, “Do you play the hand drum or would you like to try? Come join us.  Do you like flute music along with your art appreciation?  I will play for you as you wander through our gallery.  Would you like to hear the haunting drone of the didjerido?  I will demonstrate this ancient instrument. Come join us!”

Positronic Cats 2
On Sunday, July 5, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Gallery 20, The Positronic Cats will be providing the music. The Greencastle-based acoustic folk duo use simple chord progressions, powerful vocals and intricate mandolin phrasings as a foundation for their songs about love, revenge and the future. The group is made up of Waylon K. Smith, vocals and classical guitar, and Jim Taylor, mandolin.

Gerald Kowallis and Brenda SlickFriday, June 26, in Gallery 20 East, from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., Gerald Kowallis (vocals) accompanied by pianist Brenda Slick will be performing.  Jerry will be singing a group of original songs he has written set to the poetry of Robert North, local poet and master tinsmith, called “Songs of a Tinsmith”.  He will also be singing three songs for which he wrote both music and lyrics.  “Just a Little Laughter”, a song about the need for joy and laughter in our lives: “Mary Ponders”, in which the mother of Jesus sings a lullaby and wonders what lies ahead for the child she bore: and “Longing”, a love song about a hoped for mutual love yet to be.  Kowallis’ extensive performance experience includes roles at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, Allenberry Playhouse, Trinity Players, and Mercersburg Area Community Chorus.  He is the former longtime choral director at the Waynesboro Area Senior High School.

Ed Beard with EagleEd Beard will be demonstrating wood burning feathers and eagles on Saturday, June 27 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the 42 West Arts Co-Op.  Ed is an educator/artist and has been a woodworker for 50 years.  He is a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsman – Cumberland Valley Chapter, the Lincoln Highway Heritage group and a member of Woodsmith’s advisory board.  “I enjoy working with wood species native to Pennsylvania to create functional art showing the natural grain and finish of the wood.” Ed enjoys teaching kids and resides near Greencastle, PA with wife Pat, a handweaver.

Denny with ElephantDenny Bingaman will be demonstrating sculpting in clay “The African Elephant” on Saturday June 27 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the 42 West Arts Co-Op.  Denny is a native of Waynesboro, PA, who photographs birds and wildlife in the local area as well as other parts of the country.  He also works with clay, making sculptures of wildlife using his photographs as reference.  The clay works are used to render rubber molds for casting cold cast bronze, copper, etc. After casting a patina is applied, finished off with steel wool and waxed.

PatricDigeridooLessonPatric will demonstrate how to play the didgeridoo using circular breathing on Saturday, July 25th.    The Didgeridoo is a wind instrument developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia around 1500 years ago and is still in widespread use today both in Australia and around the world.  It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet or “done pipe”

A native of Baltimore, Schlee lived on remote West Virginia mountain land until he moved to South Mountain 25 years ago.   He has spent many years fine-tuning his wind chime, flute, and chime harp designs.

He appeared at many fine art and craft shows selling and displaying his unique crafts.

Waynesboro Children’s Theatre Troupe
will present “Show Tunes” with music from popular stage shows on Saturday, June 27, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Center Square (rain site, Gallery 20 East).  Since 1995, WCTT has provided opportunities for children’s drama experiences through the production of classics like The Wizard of OZ, Cinderella, Oliver, and South Pacific.

Waylon K. SmithSquareSchiers Furniture Lifestyles Waylon K. Smith of the Positronic Cats will make a solo appearance at Schier’s Furniture Lifestyles, 37 West Main St. on Saturday, June 27, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m.  Waylon will be performing original songs as well as covers of several rock and folk songs.  Champagne and Zoe’s Chocolates will be served.  Sponsored by Schier’s Furniture.

Island Fusion
On Sunday, June 28, from 2:00 to 4:00 p. m. Gallery 20 East (Weather permitting the performance may be moved to Center Square). “Island Fusion” featuring Jody and Nancy Messich will present their exciting combination of musical styles which includes Jimmy Buffet hits, rock standards, and traditional island tunes performed on a real steel drum.  Bring your dancing shoes!
